Denver Royal
WoodleyRoyal Well blow me down with a feather. 99 votes 49 in 50 out. Divided the fans or what

Yep, right down the middle.

So, if he goes, is there anyone out there that wouldn’t be ok with Chris Hughton as his successor?

Because as far as unifying the fan base, it occurred to me that Hughton just might me our most unanimously approved appointment in quite some time. Even Coppell had his detractors at first.

Chris Hughton would be a great appointment IMO but interestingly enough, in 2014 he joined Brighton who were in an almost identical situation to us when Gomes came last season. Here's some stats between the two

Hughton (Brighton) 2014/15 P22 W6 D6 L10 Points : 24 PPG : 1.09
Gomes (Reading) 2018/19 P23 W6 D10 L7 Points : 28 PPG : 1.22

This shows Gomes actually outperformed Hughton when both joined their retrospective clubs. The difference being is Hughton built on his foundations of keeping Brighton up whereas Gomes seemed to rip up his plan and start again (although to be fair a dodgy pre season with the youth wouldn't have helped).

Football is a very unforgiving game. Owners pump money at whatever cost and they'll want to see a return quickly. In the 9 games that have preceded the influx of signings, we've got 8 points. Word it whatever way you want, make all the excuses in the world, it's simply not good enough in the current climate. 15 years ago, possibly. But there's an inverse relationship between the amount of money pumped in and the amount of time an owner will give you

However, this does also show one thing. Whilst Hughton is a very good manager with a very good pedigree, if we were to get him, it may not be the instant fix that some people may expect...as the stats above show

Good grief, Mark Hughes is an utter fraud of a manager! Just ask any QPR fan!

QPR were a total basket case when he became manager. His record is generally OK.

Exactly you need only to look at sciag’s post to see that. We could not honestly expect to pick up a better manager

I honestly can not believe what I'm reading. oxf*rd Mark Hughes. What's this club come to.

Mark Hughes has only ever managed in the Premier League, am I right? And some of you are immediately turning your nose up... fans of a club who have been battling relegation to League One for years?

Some of our fans are hilarious.

it would actually be my main concern with him that he is in effect too good - and doesn't actually know the champ very well

Thank god Royalwaster isn't as utterly clueless as the rest of you.

If we're going down the Hughes route then why not go for Ian Holloway!

Clueless.

This is the same Mark Hughes that got 3 top-10 PL finishes for Blackburn, 8th for Man City (before the oil money really kicked in), 8th for Fulham and Europa League qualification, kept QPR up when they were awful, three 9th placed finishes for Stoke, and then kept Southampton up?

For a club in Reading's situation he would be a good shout. Some of you need to re-consider where you think Reading are in the footballing pyramid.

This is almost as divisive as Brexit....

In all seriousness, I was firmly in the "Out" camp on Saturday, but he seems to have a lot of support. Whatever happens, I don't think anyone can deny the job he did last season and the annual manager change in recent years has got us nowhere. So I understand the argument of more time, as even with another few losses we won't be completely adrift. But we need to see improvements. This means clearer system, no more soft goals in first 15 minutes, more intensity in pressing. If things have not improved by mid November, his position will surely be untenable.

Arguably a stroke of luck that all the loanees worked out so well. Really was a last roll of the dice. Could have easily been disasterous.

What?

I shall no longer be entertaining speculation around Hughes as it won't happen.

I said in a different thread about how Wycombe Wanderers being 2nd in League 1 should mean Ainsworth is given the job as I think he would be able to do it on a budget. I wouldn't be adverse to Hughton either as he's a Championship specialist and given enough money in the summer we could push for promotion next season - as every season is different at this level.

Yes, there are other managers I would prefer to Hughes. My point is just it's silly to reject him out of hand, when he's got a pretty good record of getting fairly average clubs to decent league finishes.
