We've had most of our success in recent years under hair-challenged managers, so from that angle alone this move is a big plus.

No mention there on length of contract.

On the face of it, looks a terrible appointment and if I had my tin hat on, it ends up looking like he was brought in over Gomes's head and they've been building up to Bowen replacing him.

Of course I'll be a hypocrite and chant his name if things go well.

I feel very similar to how I felt with the last 4 manager appointments; Absolutely unbothered.

Suggested in the media that it's to end of the season.

Staying up is now only objective.

Be bothered about it or I'll break your legs.

Well this news is going to depress and deflate most supporters

Let’s try and be positive rather than over-reacting and not giving him a chance before a ball is even kicked though.

This will be Mark’s first sojourn as a manager so he will be anxious to get it right and prove himself. While he does not have previous experience of being in the “hot seat” he has years of experience as an assistant in the Premier League and largely not doing too badly either.

He knows the current crop of Reading players so shouldn’t need to experiment greatly to find out what works and what doesn’t

He also came in as part of Jose’s management team early this year with a particular emphasis on looking at the opposition and helping set up Reading to be effective on the day and this was generally successful so he has some nous about him

How it transfers into being a manager remains to be seen and certainly his first three games in charge are games where fan expectation is pretty damn low anyway so there should not be an outcry if results in those games are poor, while getting some good results in this games might go some way to convincing supporters that it is an appointment that might be successful

Seems a short sighted move to me. An appointment that smacks of knee jerk reaction. Let's hope that he instills some positivity and gets some quick improvement in form. If not, this could be a tricky season.....

Please give an example of an appointment that would have not smacked of knee jerk?

Most people on here always ask for 2 things when we change manager - consistancy and a speedy process. This appointment delivers the latter and potentially offers the first. Good be awful of course but could be a masterstroke.

The club statement seems to imply that it was Bowen who was responsible in the main for us staying up last season rather than Gomes does it not?

Reaction on Twitter is nothing short of a disgrace. They’re the same people that will come crawling out of the woodwork if we get a couple of wins. Twitter really is full of knobs

Not really a disgrace is it. It is a highly controversial managerial appointment done in a very dodgy looking way that our supporters aren't happy about.

Its called having an opinion and expressing it. Grow up a bit.

Not what I expected or wanted. But now it's happened I'm hoping it all works out, and will no doubt be loudly proclaiming my membership in his "Barmy Army" should we go on anything like a decent run.

 People are entitled to their opinions of course. It certainly wouldn’t have been my choice

But people saying they’re going to boo him on Saturday and rip up their season ticket. Really?

He sacked Gomes because he was underperforming. For all we know, he could have interviewed candidates who weren’t suited to the role. So he wanted to have a crack himself. Nothing “snakey” about it at all. Do you not believe these will be the same fans praising him if he takes us up the table in a couple of months?
