Worst Reading games

by Sutekh » 28 Apr 2020 13:43

What I’m thinking of here are those games from down the ages where both Reading and the opposition were quite dreadful whether Reading won, drew or lost rather than those games where Reading were just awful

One real challenger has to be the 0-0 with QPR that saw both clubs totally failing to make any fight of staying up in the PL

Any other rivals to that?

Three games in quick succession v Walsall around 2000 and the cuptie with Welling in 1990 that dragged on over four games - both the games at EP were goalless.

Two batches of awfulness.

Nah that was great entertainment.

What about our string of 0-0s with Watford? Or that time Chalobah played centre back?

Reading 0 Chesterfield 0 in 88/89 or 89/90. A game so devoid of action, the highlight was Gary Phillips miscontrolling a backpass out for a corner.

Odd thought it may sound, I vividly remember that game for being so utterly bad.

I remember the Welling cup ties and attended the 2 mind numbing home games. Welling were just trying to milk it for a cup run payday.
Paul Barron our ex goalie , seemingly intent on revenge having not previously enjoyed his time at Elm Park, and a 10 man defence, physical with it, absolutely killing the game and playing with the faint hope that they may snatch one, which they nearly did in the 2nd replay when they finally left their own half late in the 2nd half and hit our cross bar.

Oh! How football was so much better in the old days! I think not.

I have blanked out most of those, but Stevenage away in the FA Cup comes to mind.Omar apart we were terrible;a lot of pass it back chants.McShane didn’t like the sarcasm;but Gunter persuaded him to drag the team over to thank the fans for making the trip

I thought of the same game! - which was my first ever game at Elm Park. Took me another year to face my next league game - which just happened to be against Chesterfield again - and only a slightly less tedious 0-0.

Tuesday night trip to Carlisle for a dire 0-0 takes some beating.

Especially after the goal fest 3-3 a couple of seasons before

Avoiding the obviouses.....The Brizzul Rovers 0-6 and plenty of other nightmares to recall etc etc

3rd October 2009
Reading 0 Middlesborough 2

Currist we were bad, remember being sooooo bored, and to avoid leaving early, I sat there reading my geek-buy programme whilst the match was in progress. Leroy Lita scored too....and subsequently, got applauded by the home fans (for the lols and to regain a state of consciousness).

Yep they had a winger who tore us apart on a bitterly cold early February afternoon. I remember Gary Peters trying to gee up the players when we went 5-0 down. It was a bit bloody late.
Also Leyton Orient 0 Reading 0. There was the occasional bit of goalmouth action but it was very dull. This was around 1985.

Yup, was there for that shenanigans too....(rolling out my “even my fukkin halftime pasty was frozen in the middle“ line as oft written everytime that this scoreline comes up)

That was an exciting game though. We were shite but if you were a neutral you would have enjoyed it I reckon. We have been involved in far more boring games over the years.

I'll nominate Reading 0 Wigan 1 from 17th February 2015. Utter shite.

This was without doubt the worst I have seen although it has had a few close contenders recently.
