Gilkesy

by dontbedaft » 17 May 2022 07:28

Back in February it was announced that Ince and Gilkes were joint interim managers but now it's only Ince who is confirmed as permanent manager. Does that mean that Gilkes will go back to runrunrunning the U23s? It's strange that this has not been mentioned in the club announcement about the new management structure....

IIRC there was a comment in one of the Star meetings that made it sound like Gilkes has quite a lot of day to day responsibilities with his normal role, and they didn't want to take him too much away from that.

A less generous interpretation of it might be that he was only ever mentioned as part of the interim arrangement to try and keep fans happy, and was never intended to do any actual management.

Another one very fortunate to be in a job. Quite why the owners persist with him in charge of the academy is a mystery.

I can imagine he will just return to his usual job with the academy. Not sure how involved he was anyway really, whether it be just assisting with the coaching side of matters.

It will be interesting to see what our coaching staff will look like come the start of pre-season.

Gilkes was useful to help educate Ince about the club. No need for him in the first team coaching staff now and he can return to his previous role.

I know the original announcement was slightly ambiguous but it’s been apparent for a while that Ince is the manager and Gilkes is more akin to an assistant. Ince does all the media work and is by far the more active in the technical area.

Gilkes and Leigertwood never stopped doing their day jobs.
Beyond the initial phase (and especially once Alex Rae came in) it never seemed to make much sense to expect Gilkes to run the entire club !

That's not a particularly attractive salary given the knowledge and experience needed.

At least you get a day off for your birthday.

I can only assume that means Gilkes will be staying with the first team as a coach then?

And 25% off merch, because it very rarely ends up on sale

That’s not Gilksey’s job though, he is/was Academy Head. Head of Operations is a more junior job and on the Academy staff list was being done by someone else.
