Yep shock horror - I'm not judging a player until he has played for us. As has been mentioned before, you look at some of our keeper signings who went on to be good for us and on signing a lot would have been aghast. Al Habsi was a clown, Hahnemann was 3rd or 4th choice at Fulham and not rated at all by the fans there, Hislop signed from the US college system - there are probably more.

I will never get the outlook of slagging off or writing off a signing before he has even had a training session with us. If he turns out to be shocking, then fair enough, but there are so many variables that can make a keeper play poorly that simply changing clubs may make that difference - perhaps he was living away from family and was struggling as a result? I don't know and his past career is not really of any interest to me.

It's endearing if occasionally frustrating.

You don't have to see someone play to callout whether they're a good or bad signing. You should always remember that apparently good signings can turn out bad on the pitch and apparently bad signings can really step it up and pass muster. Those ways round are just less likely.

I was just particularly enjoying you taking two negatives - Lumley having a concentration issue (not really any evidence of that) and our defence being rubbish, and that adding up to a positive because he won’t have time to lose concentration. That's a special kind of optimism.

Just putting forward possible reasoning for him being "shit" but as I've stated many times - a GK does not get to play over 100 games at this level (when only 24 can play at any given time) and be shit. He has an error in him clearly but he obviously has qualities that have seen him picked for that number of games by at least 3 managers at 2 clubs.

Among the mockery from QPR and Boro fans, there are plenty of "there's a good player in there" comments. Hopefully a new environment and a bit of confidence will bring it out.

Apparently Bowen knows JL from their time together at QPR years ago (as does Laurent). Not sure if this is a good reason for getting him in on loan.

It would be a good reason not to get him if he is an irredeemably poor keeper. Which he clearly isn’t !

Well quite, if Bowen knows him, he can't think he's shit. Which he isn't - he'd be nowhere near the Championship if he was.

I found it quite ironic in Lumley's first interview that he says he knows some of the lads, naming Laurent, who looks set to leave in about 10 days time.

We've had more than enough shit players to know you can spend time in the Championship and still be shit.

Bowen knowing him is definitely a positive. But he knew him three or four years ago and what promise he was showing at the time, that doesn’t mean he knows how good he is now. Could easily be relying on memory and that promise being realised when actually he'd stagnated or gone backwards.

Outfield players who aren't quite good enough can sometimes bumble along granted esp. if seen as versatile. Keeper is a different beast. You only have 1 spot available so just getting to be a 1st choice puts you in the top few percent of all keepers.

He's not shit.

Of course he is.
People who have never seen him play have decided he is.
End of discussion.

We'll be in much bigger trouble than just having a potentially dodgy keeper if our new manager and head of recruitment are agreeing to sign players based entirely off the distant memories of our director of football.

I don't think that is really true, the only real positive you take from that is that you know the person and know what type of character you are buying, which is certainly a positive before a transfer happens.

We've obviously identified him as a top target, decent keeper at this level, hopefully he will address a major issue in our squad about having a settled number 1 and someone more capable/stronger from crosses and set pieces. If we get that, we've made an improvement.

:-D Just basic maths.

Take the number of people who want to be a professional GK and only the top what 0.5-1% make it in England - then he has to be seen by professionals as being one of the top 40/50 active keepers in England to get a regular starting berth. So he can't be crap as it only takes one coach at any level since he was 12 to decide he can't cut it and he ends up playing for Littlehampton Town at best.

I liked his comment about him being desperate to play all 46 league matches when he's only eligible in 44.

EFL clubs can waive the clause banning a player from playing against his parent club.

All seriousness though, agreed with this

Said before but there’s a huge psychological momentum when it comes to the performances of GK’s. Sure, he may have had a bad season but that happens with goalies more so than any other position as it can be difficult to get out of a mindset and it’s the one position where you’re not likely to be bailed out when making a mistake (last line and all that)

All this negativity just adds unnecessary pressure, don’t need people jumping on his back already

IIRC Hahneman had a dodgy time at Fulham before joining us and he didn't end up doing too badly did he?

Enough has been said about the lad on here, good, bad, indifferent?

Let him have the casting vote in a few weeks time

I can't believe nobody has yet mentioned how error-prone he allegedly is. Do we honestly want another error-prone keeper? DIscuss.
