Would be very frustrating if we can't get Sarr and NGW done before the deadline considering they've been training with us for so long.

Yes I know, would be good to have them involved for tomorrow as well, even if it's just on the bench, it does makes us look a lot stronger.

Shame about Drinkwater as well but not a disaster as nobody really expected him to sign on again anyway. Would have liked to have kept him based on his performances under Ince, but if it doesn't happen I won't lose any sleep. Hopefully once Loum signs on, we are looking stronger in that area.

Has Drinkwater gone anywhere ?

If not, he's a free agent (a la Carroll) and could be picked up beyond the closing of the window

Assuming we have room in the age cap and also below the maximum number of permitted players.

NGW was announced at midday, and presumably EFL registration was sorted before then. He's been training with us for weeks. He can play tomorrow.

Drinkwater very unlikely to join Reading, apparently he’s been talking of a move abroad.

We are not allowed more than 25 senior players. Does Moore count as a senior player? Does Southwood?

I think loans out don't count this year, they did last. Moore will count, which makes his lack of a number surprising.

That would mean we would have 22 senior professionals which would include Moore, Puscas, Sarr and Loum but excluding Southwood.

There are two issues with Moore.
1. He currently fills one of the 25 ‘permitted player’ spots
2. His salary takes up quite a chunk of our £16 million cap.

I don’t think we could (or should) be allowed to exclude his salary from the cap.
But there may be an arguement if he is going to be out for months that we may be able to get him declared ineligible for the first team until December 31st allowing us to replace him with either aloan or a short term contract player, assuming we have room in the cap. There is reference in the agreements to players who are contractually ineligible for the first team to not be counted as a permitted player although I’m sure this is not the scenario that was intended to cover.

Pretty decent sized squad with room to maneuver in terms of numbers anyway. What we have left in the bank regarding wages after the Sarr and Loum deals (potentially the Hutchinson and BOO deals as well) will be telling. We must have done well on our wage bill in order to have so many new faces come in. I know there have been some bigger departures this summer, but with the likes of Moore and Puscas still on the wage bill and taking up a big chunk there will be some small wages for some players I imagine.

Being able to offload Moore in January may be absolutely massive if we need quality recruits depending on our position in the table.

By ‘senior’ you mean ‘permitted’, either not started 3 games at Championship level or signed after October 2021 ?
So some of the newcomers have not played 3 championship games but still count as ‘permitted’.

It’s hard to see how we would be able to offload Moore in a way that frees up any space on the wage bill. We’ll either be paying him off or paying most of his wages as part of a loan deal.

OK. Would Guinness Walker not fall within the permitted criteria?

Depends who comes in for him I suppose. Even being able to offload a third to half of his wages would potentially free up another couple of players as well depending on space in the squad and wage demands.

If it's somebody in the MLS as previously reported very early into the summer, it may be possible to offload most/all of his wages. Championship clubs isn't impossible either, particularly subsidising half of his wages, but at much more of a premium of course and he won't play any higher.

He’ll hardly have played for over a year, he will have had several significant injuries, he’ll be a free agent in a few months. Why would anyone take him or even look at him ? Getting him away would only free up one space anyway...

Do we have to actually register him as a player? Granted his wages will still contribute to our limit but wondered if that’s why he has no squad number

That's where my head was at. Don't register him for us this season and free up a spot in the squad. Highly unlikely he'd be fit and up to speed much before January anyway and then we'll be looking to ship him out somewhere else.
