- FA Cup, collecting 2 bookings between rounds 3 and 6 results in 1 game ban

In all competitions a red card means one of the following (bans are immediate, unless appealed by the club, and applied across all first team competitions):

1 game ban

  1. Denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence
  2. Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick
  3. Receiving two yellow cards in the same game

2 game ban

  1. Using abusive or offensive language and/or gestures

3 game ban

  1. Serious foul play (generally deemed to be a challenge or tackle that threatens an opponent's safety)

Funny to think that Lumley is the joint closest player to receiving a 1 match ban in our squad, a goalkeeper receiving a ban for accumulation of bookings isn't something you see everyday.

Andy Yiadom is really going for it. Now booked 4 times he’s leading the way to a 1 match suspension. Just needs to negotiate the next 9 games safely to avoid being only the second suspension Reading has suffered in the last 2 and a bit years

At least there’s a few centre backs on the books now to cover him… …injury allowing

Is this true ?
I can recall red cards for Swift and Holmes fairly recently but can’t recall exactly when they were !

John Swift has never received a red card in his career and Tom Holmes has received 1 red card in an FA Youth Cup game.

Slightly surprised Yiadom hasn’t had a suspension before. He can be a bit of a walking card at times.

Lumley making a real effort too... one for the stattos... have we ever had a player suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards purely for time wasting?

We've had none for yellow cards for quite some time. Hoilett got a one match suspension last season for his red.

Meite got a red in the final game of the restarted 19/20 season, so missed the first 3 games of 20/21 in September 2021. So depending on how you want to count back, this would be just the 3rd suspension in a little over 2 years when he gets booked (no way he goes 9 games without a yellow).

Did John Swift not get sent off vs Fulham a few years back?

Yes, you’re quite correct. 2019/20, I misread the table as I was looking at straight reds only. No red for Holmes though.

I’m sure we got a red card in a league cup game not long ago. If it wasn’t Holmes it must have been McIntyre ?

McIntyre, FA Cup, January 2020.

Stranded (no way he goes 9 games without a yellow)

But he could avoid suspension in the traditional Reading manner, by getting injured.

It was either Fulham or Leeds and we were hammered

Could be a little “squeaky” for three bottoms that play against Burnley, Luton and/or Preston as Hutchinson (if he gets fit enough to return in any of those games), Hoilett and Holmes are all on 4 bookings now meaning 1 more booking for any provides that player with a free day off.

Really unusual to be bothered about watching discipline after 2 years of Paunovic!

We haven't been winning for long enough in many recent games for him to egregiously time waste

Thought I’d give a full update on club naughtiness in the Championship…

Reading are 10th (equal 7th) in the current disciplinary/fair play standings….

Team - Points Amassed
  1. Queens Park Rangers - 22
  2. Millwall - 27
  3. Stoke City - 27
  4. West Bromwich Albion - 27
  5. Luton Town - 28
  6. Norwich City - 31
  7. Huddersfield Town - 32
  8. Birmingham City - 32
  9. Burnley - 32
  10. Reading - 32
  11. Coventry City - 33
  12. Blackburn Rovers - 34
  13. Rotherham United - 34
  14. Watford - 34
  15. Hull City - 35
  16. Wigan Athletic - 36
  17. Bristol City - 38
  18. Sheffield United - 40
  19. Middlesbrough - 41
  20. Preston North End - 42
  21. Swansea City - 42
  22. Blackpool - 43
  23. Cardiff City - 44
  24. Sunderland - 46

Current Reading player disciplinary status:

Name - Points
  1. Andy Yiadom - 5 (1 game suspension served v Bristol City)
  2. Mamadou Loum - 4
  3. Junior Hoilett - 3
  4. Tom Holmes - 3
  5. Sam Hutchinson - 3
  6. Tom Ince - 2
  7. Joe Lumley - 2
  8. Tom McIntyre - 2
  9. Baba Rahman - 2
  10. Tyrese Fornah - 1
  11. Nesta Guinness-Walker - 1
  12. Kelvin Abrefa - 1
  13. Dean Bouzanis - 1
  14. Andy Carroll - 1
  15. Shane Long - 1

Just for the record the naughtiest players in the league are Watford’s Hassane Kamara and Coventry’s Gustavo Hamer who have both reached 9 disciplinary points already and are therefore a booking each away from a 2 game suspension.

Hasn't Hamer been sent off twice this season as well for Coventry?

Yep! He’s actually received a straight red once (that’s 5 points alone) he’s then been booked once (1 point) and in one other game he was booked twice and so received another red (that’s 3 points). A booking for him on the 8th or 12th November will put him out of the Reading game on 10th December.
