The squad in July

by Sutekh » 03 May 2023 09:37

On 1st July Reading's first team squad is currently scheduled to comprise the following:

  1. Nelson Abbey
  2. Kelvin Abrefa
  3. Jokull Andresson
  4. Femi Azeez
  5. Dean Bouzanis
  6. Andy Carroll
  7. Mamadi Camará
  8. Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan
  9. Ovie Ejaria
  10. Sam Hutchinson
  11. Tom Holmes
  12. Tom Ince
  13. Amadou Mbengue (technically out of contract this summer but has a 1 year option, which I'm fairly sure the club will take up)
  14. Tom McIntyre
  15. George Puscas (off to Genoa if they get promoted)
  16. Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr
  17. Andy Yiadom

That's 16 left after Puscas goes.

That's a frighteningly small squad. We need to boost that with several academy grads and make several signings. The summer wont be dull, that's for sure.

Think we have an option on NGW as well

Squad looks a good starting point to me - for DIV1 anyway. Would be dreadful for the champ

I wonder if our next manager will be the one to bring out the good player that is somewhere within Ejaria.

Presumably previous managers at Liverpool, Rangers and at Reading believed that they could it so it would be a real bonus for the club if the new miracle man can succeed where others have generally for the most part failed.

How many go up automatically from Serie B? I am sure it was just one last year. Genoa look likely to finish 2nd but is that just a playoff spot?

It would take a six point deduction for them not to go up this year.

Better that way than having a bloated squad to be fair. Means the next manager has total flexibility to make the squad his own.

Don't think it's frightening at all. It's only football so I'd be happy with any squad, no matter how small.

Top 2 go up automatically, 3-8th potentially comprise the play-offs but you only qualify if you finish within 14pts of 3rd, so currently the play-offs go down to 6th, Genoa however are 6pts clear of 3rd with 3 to play so are basically there already.

Have to agree, a squad is considered 25 players and we have 16, plus any academy players that can make the step up, that's not small to me.

Don’t think squad size matters too much, after all most of it will be injured at any one time.

I actually feel that having so few players in contract is a good thing. There's too much rot in the squad with a losing mentality. It also means we'll easily meet FFP unless we go mad on wages.

I would hope Tom Ince stays, not that he will. Hopefully we can bring in 9-10 signings.

1 left back, 1 centre back with experience, 4 centre midfielders, 2 wingers/attacking midfielders and 2 strikers. Think we're ok in goal.

I think we'd be up there in L1 with a side like this:

Bouzanis, Yiadom, Holmes, McIntyre, NGW, new signing, new signing, new signing, Ince, Camara, Carroll

With CBC, Mbengue, Ehibationianham etc on the bench

There isn't FFP in League 1.

Are all U21's except for those in the list out of contract?

Need to tie the likes of Senga down

So eleven senior players.

Bouzanis
Yiadom, Holmes, Sarr, McIntyre
Mbengue, Hutchinson
Azeez. Ince, Ejaria
Carroll

Bunch of injury prone players and too many centre backs. Still a very good League One eleven.

I think it makes us more attractive to a new manager, if there are decent funds to bring players in. We just need to appoint someone early and give them the whole season break to shape the squad for next season, and they have some excellent people behind the scenes to help them do that.

We have 16 players to enter pre-season with (that's not even a match day squad).

Some of those players will want to leave this summer.
Many of those players are frequently injured.

Kids will come in, maybe 5-6.
We'll need to replace players sold like-for-like on top of already needing another 10 pros to come in.

That is a wee bit concerning, especially as some of those players in our squad aren't good enough and are here purely as we were desperate for bodies last summer.
