FIRST TWO AWAY FRIENDLIES ANNOUNCED | BRISTOL CITY AND SUTTON UNITED

Next season starts here. So let’s set the pre-season wheels in motion...

We can now announce the first two pre-season friendlies in our calendar for this summer. A meeting with City before we travel to United.

On Wednesday 12 July, the Royals will travel to Bristol City’s training ground for a behind closed doors clash with the Robins.

City ended their Championship campaign in 14th last season – the Royals won 2-0 at home against the Robins back in October before earning a point at Ashton Gate in a 1-1 draw in April.

Kick-off against Nigel Pearson’s men will be at 12.30pm and, although the game at the Robins High Performance Centre will not be open to the public - as with all of Bristol City's home pre-season friendlies we will bring you all of the action via our social media channels and the official club website.

Then, the following weekend, Royals fans will be able to see their side in action in person when we travel to south-west London for a pre-season meeting with League Two’s Sutton United at the VBS Community Stadium.

Kick-off at Gander Green Lane will be at 3pm on Saturday 15 July
as United look to prepare for their third successive season in the fourth tier following their National League title win in 2021.

Sutton, who have former Royals boss Terry Bullivant in post as their very first Director of Football, finished the League Two season in 14th place under the management of Matt Gray.

And of course it will see former United goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis return to his former club as the Royals ramp up their preparations for life in League One.

Ticket details for fans wanting to enjoy the first away day of the summer will be announced in due course.

The pre-season calendar will continue to take shape in the coming days and weeks and we will keep supporters up to date with further fixtures as and when they are confirmed.

It wasn't that long ago (2014 - just checked) we were sending a youth XI for a friendly at Sutton.

I would hope for a better outcome, as Sutton won 4-0 that day.

If desired we can watch the BCD friendly against Bristol City on Wednesday 12th July KO 12.30pm by paying £5 to Robins TV.

Some right idiots moaning online that we shouldn't be playing League Two teams like Sutton in friendlies.

How can you be a functioning adult football fan and not noticed clubs virtually always play away friendlies at teams from a lower division?

Who are these people who don't understand what the purpose of pre-season friendlies are?

The friendlies we had in the 106 season were:
  • Staines Town (Won 6-3)
  • Didcot Town (Won 7-0)
  • Farnborough Town (Lost 2-1)
  • Eneryda IF (Won 6-0)
  • Holmalunds IF (Won 8-0)
  • Ljungkile SK (Won 2-1)
  • Tottenham Hotspur (Lost 2-0)
  • Dorchester Town (Lost 2-1)
It's almost as if playing mostly non-league and Swedish lower league sides had no impact on the season - even the two defeats to non-league sides.

Anyone who can't understand that pre-season friendlies are merely for building fitness, understanding of tactics and team cohesion before the season begins really shouldn't be listened to - these people just want to complain about something. Sutton away is the perfect type of friendly we should be playing in pre-season, along with a behind closed doors game with Bristol City. I imagine we'll play a Premier League/top Championship side at home a week before the season starts - a side like Southampton or Crystal Palace. At the end of the day, we need the best preparation possible ahead of the new season - not trying to play the biggest sides possible on every available date.

Twitter gives a platform to people with absolutely zero clue who barely pay attention to anything to shout their ill informed view into the void with exactly the same weight as anyone else.

It's just a space for pub bores and attention seekers.

It doesn't matter who you play in a friendly. It's all about match fitness. So yes they're silly, they just want us to play a premier league team which we may well do yet. So yes I agree. They're probably teenagers who are moaning.

Oh ffs. I thought the one good thing about being relegated would be avoiding watching them pass the ball around us for 90 minutes.

They aren't doing the bloody Swansea game again surely? Quite incredible.

Very surprised they haven't either gone for or got a game against a PL club - even Luton. Home game v Spurs or similar size would have likely seen 15 to 20k turn up. Swansea, again, be lucky to get 8k although it will be the first opportunity to see the new team and whoever the new manager ends up being.

I was hoping for the Hammers at home. I used to enjoy going to Didcot a few years back.

Swansea. They should make that free entry, do a few things for the kids and they'll make some money on food/drink. I can't imagine more than 5000 will pay to watch that rubbish.

Then that is 5000 people paying money to watch the game rather than 10,000 free loaders.

Please don't run a business for your own sake.

Maybe we asked loads, but they all turned us down.

It is spectacularly uninspiring.
