Reading spent £345,000 on agents fees last season!

by riverroyal » 13 Jul 2006 10:51

The football league (what we used to be in) have published their report on agents fees. Turns out Reading spent £345,000 on agents fees, the seventh highest in the Championship. Leeds spent the most, £604,000.

I hate to say it, but it's money well spent when you look at the signings we made.

Only seventh highest? Given where we finished that's pretty shrewd operating shirley?

Still too much. Agents represent the players, so the players should pay their fees.

The players'd just charge more to cover such costs wouldn't they? Don't think it would make any difference. It's still a cost that has to be met somewhere along the line.

Don't get me wrong, for the most part I'm of the opinion that agents are leeches who don't actually do very much for their money.

Maybe so, but if we don't pay the agent the player will just get a bigger signing on fee. The same amount of money will still be paid out or you will miss out on the players you want.

Yes, but most players are greedy b*stards and would soon dump their agents/drive down the costs if they thought they could save a few quid.

More and more people are realising this - it's definitely coming, but slow progress to change.

But there might be a huge psychological advantage for the clubs if the players saw that extra money going into their bank accounts and then had to write out a cheque themselves to their agent!

However, I belong to the school of thought that accepts that some agents might actually do a good job. Not all players are as bright, sensible and articulate as the likes of Lovell, Forster and Kitson. It would probably be a real nightmare having to negotiate direct with some of the less bright individuals.

I think Agents do a very good job......

Agents work is unpredictable and they don't have a regular income every month. They need large deal sizes to pay for the months that they don't earn anything.

Also, I don't Coppell, Hammond etc have time to check which players are available, what money they are on and can they afford players. Agents are matching players to teams all the time. If a player is at the end of their contract its the agent who will bring that to the attention of clubs who may be interested in that player. The club then has to decide whether that player can improve their team.

Agents are a part of football, they will always be a part of football and they should be respected.

Wasn't Eric Hall Forster's agent?

Not when they only just represent the player's interests, done zero work for the club and yet demand too much money from the club.

Yes he was (is) and I believe was instrumental in Forster deciding to join us rather than some of the other teams that were after him. I think he also had some influence in Forster deciding to renew his contract with us, rather than moving elsewhere.

BTW, didn't mean to imply that bright players don't have/need good agents, just that agents probably add more value when handling the less intellectually gifted footballers.

Eric hall was also Caskey's agent and is allegedly the sole reason Caskey didn't join Millwall after he left us. Theo Paphitis thought he was a complete oxf*rd and didn't want him representing anyone at the club.

I don't have a problem with agents, except maybe the likes of Bernie Mandric who seem to pocket 40% of every deal they are involved in.

Surprised that we spent as much as the figure given but I back up the views already raised. For every prick of an agent, you get the good ones who do the club and player both a good job.

The only recent transfer in the last few that I can think of that hasn't gone through because of an agent was David Connolly who had ridiculous wage demands that we couldn't match and weren't going to match.

Sometimes agents are used by clubs to get rid of players and to help others come to the club. It's not all bad despite what some might say.

You may as well say that the players represent the fans so we should just pay our gate money direct to them!

Agents have a role to play, but obviously some of them are too interested in unsettling players and moving players about to generate more income for themselves. These are ones the game, and the players could do without.
