Charlie Hurley . Should Steve Coppell be worried?

by AthleticoSpizz » 10 Mar 2007 20:15

maybe a dodd or a dudd

Reading the RC tonight there is a column on Sir Charlie.

He led Reading to their first promotion in 50! years.

I honestly believe that I had read the announcement of his death recently....yet the Chronicle says "to this day Hurley now 70" :?

Always will have a place in my heart....."Charlie Hurleys Blue and White Army"....the first time I heard that tune

So do I - just like you always remember with affection your first snog and your first shag, you always remember you first ".......'s Blue and White Army" in the same way!

Alive or dead?

If alive....well worthy of a Golden Gamble guest visit....and a darned site more.

If dead...still worthy of a seat in the west stand

Another of our Cork links. Still very much alive and well.
Sunderland legend in his playing days, and one of the best centre backs of his day also!
Very rarely mentioned on here though.

I'm too young to remember, but old enough to know that after midnight on a Saturday night is not the busiest posting time of the day.

Anyone care to fill a noob like me on the history?

Charlie was manager when I first started supporting Reading. He is also credited with discovering a certain Robin Friday which makes him part of the folklore of the Biscuitmen as we then were.

he used to live in a posh house between Tilehurst and Sulham.

A hero of mine. Third in Division 4, what a season.

Never forget when I met the great man! As a 10 year old I discovered the Estate agent selling our house in Pangbourne was a director at Reading. Spotting I was a fan he offered me and a friend two seats in the directors box for one game against Northampton Town. After the game he took us to meet Charlie. What an honour!! I remember CH asked us who was my favourite player, the answer... Steve Death!

We met him a couple of season ago at Sunderland when we won 2-1. He was doing something at the game like the golden gamble. He was staying in the same hotel as us and the Reading team. He was a genuinely nice bloke who had time for everyone.

AND he was the man credited with selecting "The Royals" as our new nickname, following a comp held by The Chronic in the early/mid 70's. Top Man.

He brought some necessary defensive vigour to the team after the rollercoaster ride of the Mansell years. I think in his second season we had the best defensive record in the league.

He was a decent defender in his playing days. Was voted in the top 3 in Sunderlands Player of the Century poll and is something of a Mackem legend.

From my recolection, when he left us the South Bank set up a chorus of "Don't cry for us Charlie Hurley, we never loved you ......." to the tune from Evita

If Hurley hadn't been manager at the time we probably wouldn't have seen the best of Robin Friday.

Haven't read that one. I've read ' The Greatest Player You Never Saw,' though.

Who was the one you read about? Sounds interesting.
