THE TWO TYPES OF READING FAN

by Einstein agogo » 21 Aug 2009 07:41

1. Pre Madejeski , used to div 3 or 4 , standing in the rain , making lots of noise for 5k , having a laugh , enjoying the football what-ever. living with fear of financial collapse , avoiding the coins being lobbed at you by away supporters, dozy chairmen , erractic managers , rollercoaster performances. CURRENTLY - amazed at what sir john has done , in awe of the fantastic stadium , over joyed with the premier status for a couple of years , thoroughly admiring the academy , delight at the club's superb financial footing , impressed with chairman's choices of manager (only 2 failures really Bullivant & Burns )
Since Our current chairman has taken charge - THIS club has gone from strength to strength , we would not even exist IMO if it wasn't for John.

2. Plastic , seen a few picture of elm park in a book once , Only been to the mad stat , used to support Man Utd ,normally moans all the way through matches , fairly quiet unless one of OUR players makes a mistake. Currently HATES the chairman , doesn't appreciate 1 iota what he's done for the club , think reading are a "big club" and needs to BUY success at what-ever the cost. Think it's a god given that we should be in the premier league. Critisises current manager after 3 games , critises one of the best managers in english football , who got a low budget team to amass the greatest ever points tally of a british football club etc..

so... what are you ?

There are probably more types but you certainly have two of them. I am like the first one but i stood in the southbank so i didn't get wet!! I get wetter now in the Madejski!!

First match 1981 - been a regular and ST holder ever since. So, I'm a 1), but like 2) I'm getting increasingly frustrated by our Chairman.

Exactly - there seem to be loads of the first type who are the biggest moaners.

I'm the one not mentioned, the one who thinks we should be in the Premiership and should be splashing the cash a bit more (but not to ridicullous proportions) and appreciates what JM has done and used to years of non-descript rubbish and promises never kept.

PS First game in 1979

Sorry, but I don't fit into either of your moulds. Can we have some more options?

I am definitely in neither of those camps. I would say there are at least 5 types.

First game I cannot remember much as I was only 5 at the time - it was 1969. Fist real game I can remember was 1974 (ish) against Barnsley. It was nil-nil and dreadful. I occasionally helped to sweep the terraces on a Sunday as I knew the groundsman's son. Good memories.

But now I am so much older,I cannot honestly say I miss Elm Park at all. I do miss, however, being able to park close to the ground for nowt and getting away quicker after the game.

Thanks for that utter rubbish, but it did pass a few minutes on a Friday morning at work, so it wasnt all bad.

I am happily a Plastic then, who goes to loads of way games, never moans, understands how businesses work and generally enjoys himself on a Saturday afternoon win draw or lose (when the are aftrenoons), just because my parents would take me to football should make me a outcast as I have only ever been to the Madstad.

Thanks again, and could you do someting similiar next Friday morning for my weekly entertainment.

First game 1971 yet I remember certain supporters giving Roger Smee plenty of "advice" regarding fiscal policy. That is the lot of a football chairman I suppose. Have the great unwashed tell THEM what to do with THEIR money.

TBF the unrest and unhappiness re Madejski's spending or lack thereof has only really come to a head in the last couple of seasons or so.

Not true. I remember the lack of ambition being stated prior to 2005/6, with many fans insisting we should "go for broke" pushing for promotion, as there's no point just being a championship club.

I am post-Madejski the chairman but pre-Madejski the stadium, and stood on the South Bank for two seasons, before watching us toil in League One for what seemed like forever - so it was five seasons or so before I saw any real 'success' (it's all relative!).
