Don’t miss the last Hall of Fame!

by STAR Liaison » 08 Sep 2022 15:30

For the last time, until 2032, STAR’s Reading FC Hall of Fame gathers to welcome a host of new inductees on Sunday 25 September. Doors open at the Princess Suite at 7pm for a 7.30pm kick-off. Entry is free and all Reading supporters are welcome.

There will be 26 new Hall of Fame names, including some of the most iconic stars of recent and not-so-recent years. Some will be there in person to receive their awards; family members will represent others sadly unable to be with us. They’ll be goal footage and a few words from some inductees. The show is a slice of the club’s whole history, celebrating those who helped us survive as well as those who brought us glory. Come and find out who’s in, as the Hall of Fame reaches its 125 names capacity!

This is an evening designed to bring the Reading FC football community together, with representatives from the club, STAR, the Former Players Association, the media and supporters present. Also on show around the Princess Suite will be displays from the Collectors & Historians Society, the RFC Community Trust, the Reading Women’s team, Reading University and the Tilehurst End podcast.

Hall of Fame, Sunday 25 September 7pm Princess Suite, SCL Stadium, Reading.

Thought the last one of these was really good, even though it was virtual.
Looking forward to a live one and seeing who has been included.
Expecting a Nobber to be on the list to represent the online fan base.

BUMP

It’s the last in the series of STAR’s Reading FC’s Hall of Fame this Sunday 25 September. There will be 26 new inductees – from 1880s to the 2010s – including some of the club’s greatest names and a few surprises too.

The show will include live appearances from some inductees, messages from others and historic goal clips. Roger Titford, the STAR Heritage Officer, says, “We’ve been building the Hall of Fame since 2016 as a celebration of the club’s 150 year history and the evening is about those who brought us glory – or helped us survive. Come and find out who’s in.”

Doors open at 7pm for 7.30pm start at the Princess Suite, SCL Stadium. It’s free and it’s open to all Reading supporters. Free parking - pay bar.

A great last induction event and a good turn out despite the M4 chaos. Good to see Lawrie Sanchez, Les Chappell, Mark McGhee, Ron Grant, and George Harris's widow there in person to receive their awards and a nice video link with Dylan Kerr, who obviously still has a soft spot for the club. Due to the traffic, I understand that Nicky Forster only arrived as it was winding up.

Nice to see Sir John, Bobby Williams and the legend that is Mick Foster there as well. Cheers when Robin Friday was announced and the Friday family was there in force. Had a lovely chat with them and related the tale of how I got Robin's shirt, which was recently at the 150 exhibition at Reading museum. Genuinely moving to meet them. Excellent final additions to the HoF, but slightly surprised that Simon Osborn did not make it from the 1990s era.

That is it until 2032. Been a real honour to be involved with the project since 2016 and congrats to Paula, Roger and everyone at STAR for seeing it through to completion.

Agreed. Many thanks to all involved, brilliant idea and well executed. Out of interest might there be a subsequent publication or something to commemorate the names and stories of those entered?

Great to see how much it meant to the inductees to be recognised.
Would love their to be space found at the ground for a permanent HoF and museum.
Come on Mr Dai - would be a tremendous gift to the fans

The Hall of Fame section on the STAR website is now updated with penpix of all 26 new inductees. I think that'll have to suffice for a publication. We have at STAR Base some spare copies of the brochures for most years.

A few years back we paid for and put up posters in the concourses with a selection of HOF inductees on. Still there, I hope.

A museum has been on the STAR to do list for 20 years!! There are issues - staffing, security, funding, location etc. But now we have the display material from the Reading Museum Exhibition, which finished in August, there may be a fresh impetus to get some of this material up in the stadium. But where? Suggestions welcome.

* Bottom floor/basement in Broad Street Mall
* A function room of a pub - a dispay at the side of the room. Would hopefully drive business and be mutually beneficial so hopefully not too expensive
* Town Hall - people could visit after taking in the excellent Bayeux Tapestry replica

Maybe a Royals Tapestry with the players appearing in chronological order with images woven together showing their career highlights.... A great crossover display for both fans of Reading FC and Tapestries.

Would never have happened in his playing days, back then he always left too early, at least when running into an offside position.

That is a brilliant idea !
Needs a thread for ideas for avenues from our history to be immortalised in needlework.
My suggestions
- Bikey’s playoff tantrum at Burnley
- Murts bundling Kingsley
- the Watford ghost goal
- Robin and Lawro’s kitbag

And in 100 years time, after the forthcoming collapse of civilisation and rapture event, people could find scraps of it in the rubble and theorise about a great civilisation that once existed and the fear it had of twin towers…

Sutekh And in 100 years time, after the forthcoming collapse of civilisation and rapture event, people could find scraps of it in the rubble and theorise about a great civilisation that once existed and the fear it had of twin towers…
Then when the first time machine is made, one of them goes on a joyride back in time to witness this but ends up in the 15th century where some chap called Nostrodamus steals his notes and starts translating them badly, making predictions about what he thinks will be world events instead of events at a football club, yet surprisingly accurate.

Maybe this can be done on a computer instead, Then translated into a tapestry if we can find enough blue and white cotton and someone prepared to make it.

So many moments to capture, I can't name them all

- Bernal in the bushes watching the action
- Sir John and Steve Coppell celebrating promotion
- Superman Sonko flying about 6ft in the air about 20-30 opposition players to head the ball
- Lita's bicycle kick
- Mark Reilly coming and going
- Kebe pulling his socks up
- Mr Woof aka Jake the Dog

Need some opposition moments too
- Steve Stone missing an open goal
- Keith Gillespie getting sent off seconds after coming on
- The West Ham player crying when he was subbed (He denies it)
- Away fans from the North at Elm Park dropping to their knees in disbelief to worship the metal bird God, Concorde flying above them

The attack helicopters flying inside the stadium
The devastating floods that led to the abandonment of the Leicester game
The lad doing somersaults against Bradford
Uri Geller’s stunnjng display of mind control at EP
the pensioner who set his trousers on fire with his pipe leading to Archie doing a hamstring
The Futchers

Muzzy Isset blocking a 100mph ball at point blank distance with his gentleman parts at New Years Day home game v Leicester which was rained off at half time.

Wigan Playoff semi-final, Still one of the greatest games I can recall attending - It had everything, floodlights, late winner, full stadium, balloons on the pitch causing the ball to bounce off them, a pitch invasion, police horses on the pitch. Great night.
