Safe-Standing petition

by Svlad Cjelli » 23 Mar 2011 15:14

We've covered the arguments again and again for safe-standing - rather than add to all the existing threads I've created a new one for some new developments.

Various meeting about safe standing have happened and are on-going, as the resistance to this idea becomes less entrenched - and Hugh Robertson has agreed to look at evidence proving that safe standing areas can be safe, are able to be policed, and that there is a widespread demand from supporters.

The latter point needs supporters to mobilise and show their support. So if you support safe-standing areas - even if you don't want to stand yourself but want choice for those who do want to stand to do so elsewhere in the ground - please sign this petition : http://www.fsf.org.uk/safestanding
Even better if you leave a short note explaining your views.

David Conn in the Guardian leads with this today :

The Premier League have said they aren't going to support the petition:

Looks a bit like Elm Park in that picture...

The Premier League would say that, wouldn't they?

Probably being a bit dense here, but why "would they"?

cant see any safety concerns at all if the standing is as in germany.

all of the dinosaurs saying i was at hillsborough, we cant go back to those days etc on the radio, dont do it are arguing against something else entirely.

The PL agenda is packaging football as a premium product for the wealthy so that prices and TV contracts can be maximised at all times.

So their knee-jerk reaction will be to argue against any complication which disrupts this image they have of the game gentrified for those who can afford it, with none of the nasty riff-raff who want to stand and make noise.

I think it's Saltergate - now sadly departed. Some lovely examples of a Leitch barrier there.

I've signed the petition with a comment that Dan Johnson is a cock.

It is Saltergate. I recognise the rear wall  Not so sure that Archibald designed those barriers though as concreted terraces only came about many years after his demise.

To say seats are safer is nonsense. The only time I have suffered exrcutiating back spasms have been when sat down. Suffered a massive one in the Mad Stad a few years ago. Never had a back spasm while stood up.

I would support a disabled type area for those with genuine certified medical conditions (such as piles) that make it painfull to sit down for 2x 45 minute sessions.

One of the PL's arguments against safe standing is that more women and children attend games now.

If an all seater stadium made one stand or even the lower half of one stand safe standing, how on earth does that affect women and children or even an elderly person? It is possible to cater for everybodys needs.

Signed.

what on earth makes you think that?

They've had concrete terraces from at least the early 1930s, and probably much earlier than that too.

...a quick look...
http://www.playedinbritain.co.uk/news-f ... useums.php

so yes, he did design them, and the design dates back to improvements following the Ibrox disaster in 1902.

Just as annoying are those that seem to have the weird idea that bringing back terraces will mean that those who like to sit will somehow no longer be able to.

Overall though, it just shows that the battle isn't about arguments. It's about people not wanting to listen.

All the more reason to move those who want to stand to an areas where they're not in front of you.
