First Mascot?

by Gav » 28 Dec 2015 12:02

I've tried google to no avail, but I was wondering...

Was Kingsley our first ever mascot? Or did we have one before him? I'm assuming we didn't have a giant biscuit running along the touch line in the biscuitmen days, but was there any rudimentary pitchside cheerleading figure before Kingsley?

Didn't we just have an overweight guy dressed as a biscuit?

I have no idea, I'm just guesstimating here.

Are you on the WUM or do you genuinely not remember Barry The Biscuitman from Elm park?

Thinking back as far as 92 and I can only remember Kingley being introduced around 1997/98?

Best thing he ever did was have a fight with the Boro mascot at Elm Park!

We did have a set of cheerleaders in the 90s at Elm Park - Thames Valley Jets - would they sort of count?

Not a bespoke mascot, but back in the seventies there was a little old cheeky-chappie Evening Post (football edition) seller who used to walk around the pitch perimeter, he used to occasionally taunt the crowds and raise an occasional cheer.
He had such legendary status at the ground that the Post ran a storyline on him when he died.

Possibly

Can't remember his name, but still remember his gnome-like stature, broad smile and of course his blue and white hooped bobble hat

Definitely Henry.

Another of his party tricks was to direct the away coaches into parking spaces. First time they saw him they assumed he was competent / semi-official

Henry >>> Kingsley

So while Norwich had the likes of Captain Canary *and* (the terrifying) Norfolk Dumpling in the early 80s. The best we had prior to the late 90s was a rumbustious newspaper seller.

I don't know whether to be proud or disappointed at this news. It feels like we missed a trick by not having something biscuit-themed though.

Cheers all

Think the clue was in the 1970's part of my post regarding "Henry" Gav......point taken, although men in fancy dress weren't big back in the days of grassless pitches, Bovril and power cuts.

It was actually seeing that nightmarish dumpling-face that prompted the question in the first place, to see if we too had ever opened the gates of hell for entertainment.

I was mascot for Reading when we played Villa in the League Cup at Villa Park in the mid-eighties. Lost 4-1 (from memory). Helped Martin Hicks lose the toss but did score a goal past Gary Westwood in the warm-up.
