Sweet Caroline

by Royal_jimmy » 24 Jan 2016 10:27

I like the fact we have a song but I feel that we only need to play it once before kick off. It's played 3 or 4 times before kick off which makes us look embarrassing. I only sing it when the teams comes onto the pitch.

Who agrees that the club should cut back on it?

I was losing the will to live yesterday with it constantly being blared out. Worst was at the beginning the the music people seemingly being afraid of not playing it on kick off and due to the ref taking ages the song played on and on and on and on

Well to be fair yesterday, they only repeated the song because the lino had gone AWOL. I've noticed lately that whoever controls the music has gotten better at turning it off when the teams are ready to kick off, also I didn't hear the oxf*rd siren yesterday which is a massive plus.

If every one would stop carping about the song and get together at a few games with a song themselves then I'd have more sympathy with those that denigrate the club's attempts to get something going.

That said 4 or 5 bursts before kick off is over doing it a bit....

It has some kind of place, but if the intent was an 'anthem' then it's an epic fail. It gets no more than 'dudud, do doh' as opposed to anyone singing any of the lines, they don't encourage any line singing by repeating the same couple of lines and i cannot see it ever being spontaneously being sung, even the drummers would struggle to get it going.

I have no interest or affinity to the song.....so why do the "current day" club?
Worse still, is the repeat-loop of its' chorus line

Other than that, no particular harm done.

Like it better than anything else we have used previously. At least no-one else uses it (to my knowledge) so it is individual

You mean they nicked it off us?

Heard it played at a few venues, its catching on. N Ireland were playing it for their final qualifiers. Heard them playing it for an NFL game the other week, I thought 'that started at Reading its really gone a long way now'. Then I realised it was Carolina playing

Cut back all the way to the roots and then burn it.

Boston Red Sox have been using it since 2004 I think

Our song is Terry and June, stop trying to pretend it isn't

I can confirm that it is played at the end of Oxford games when they win (quite regularly for them these days in their Division 4 matches) and it is sung with some gusto by the crowd :!:

I live near Oxford, I have been to two of their games this season. One was a moribund Division 4 match, the other a thrilling cup match. They won both. I work with many people who follow Oxford (for almost all of whom they are their ‘second’ team, mind) so I wish them reasonably well for as long as the foreseeable future whilst they are unlikely to play RFC in a league match any time soon. Reading are a long way ahead of Oxford as a club these days and perhaps always will be from now on, that said were we to play them in the 5th round of the FA Cup this season I am not convinced we would necessarily defeat them.....

Postman Pat theme tune seemed to be on a loop before the game last Saturday - I'd rather they ditched that first.

I thought the Postman Pat theme was played when the advert for a mail service was on the big screen. Can't say I've really taken much notice but there is definitely a mail related video on at the same time.

It has to stick really. It's too late to change it. I liked it when the team walked out to Faithless - Insomnia in 05/06, felt it got the blood pumping more. I'd take that back pre-match but you can't really call it an anthem.
