Hendo
Sanguine Playoff draw. Each 'path' will produce one finalist for Qatar.

Path A - Scotland v Ukraine, Wales v Austria - so only one of Scotland and Wales will make it to the World Cup. Scotland v Austria - Austria to qualify
Path B - Russia v Poland, Sweden v Czech Republic Poland v Sweden - Poland to qualify
Path C - Italy v North Macedonia, Portugal v Turkey. Italy v Portugal - Italy to qualify

So that late Serbian winner has created a likely big final playoff tie - only one of Italy and Portugal will be in Qatar.

I’ve gone off you. We have only lost one qualifier in 19 at the CCS. Without doubt all four teams in our path to the WC Finals will feel they have a chance. They are evenly matched. We have home advantage and must make that count. Time to pay back Scotland for 77 and 85.

Oh, hang on, it’s only a 1 legged thing, isn’t it? Yeah I might need to revise the above.

Has a reigning European Champion ever failed to make the following World Cup?

EDIT: Yes Greece failed to qualify in 2006.

Yep. We are also the highest ranked of the four teams. I have a sneaking suspicion for Ukraine winning through. Unbeaten throughout their group including two draws with France.

Yep. Just checked and they failed to qualify finishing 4th in a 7 team group.

Italy in danger though of going:

2018 WC: DNQ
2021: European Champions
2022 WC: DNQ

Italy in real danger. It would be extra-ordinary if they didn’t qualify after what they achieved in the summer.

Portugal have a real history of shithousing out results when they need to. Can see them upsetting Italy.

Well I have never seen my country play in a World Cup Finals and ain’t getting any younger. Bitter about one bent pen in 77 and a dodgy one in 85? Absolutely.

I'd put decent money on Wales getting through, but it will be 2 tight games.

Italy have really blown it, how many critical penalties did Jorginho miss? Portugal away is as tough as it gets.

A lot will depend on injuries going into the play offs. Back end of March it’s anybody’s guess what state each squad will be in. I have a feeling Ukraine will win the play offs in our group of four.

I nearly hit the ceiling in excitement when Pickford saved his pea-roller at the Euros.

And two, for what it's worth, both against Switzerland, one home and one away, one of which scored would have seen Italy through automatically.

The stuttery stuttery run-up stuff would probably have been binned off, but after missing three for Chelsea in late 2020, he's scored his last 13 for the club.

It's obscene really that Wales only has one WC appearance to its name, given the players it has been able to field.

Especially when you look at Northern Ireland doing better with so much less quality.
