In purely footballing terms, Germans would also much prefer to beat (say) Italy than England. They've beaten Italy once (on penalties) at a major tournament or in qualifying but never in 90 minutes. I watched England against Croatia in a beer garden and there were lots and lots and lots of Germans around me in England shirts.
