Football Arrests Decrease by 10%

The quick version...

The number of arrests at English and Welsh football matches (domestic and international) has continued to fall, this year by 10% (approx. 400 less arrests).

There were no English fans arrested in South Africa this year, compared to the 900 who were arrested in Belgium in Euro 2000 on one night. The police have done loads of work on this and apparently its working very well.

Lol good call, forgot about that. You should sue the home office for lying. They probably measure football statistics for crime as only including certain offences, basically only those that amount to hooliganism in their eyes.

Also, comparing the SA World Cup to the Dutch/Belgian Euro 2000 is a bit disingenuous, given that one was a hell of a lot easier to get to and wasn't held during straitened economic times. Is it any wonder that casual hoolies didn't make it out to SAfrica, but could easily hop on the EuroStar to get to Belgium?

The comparison between Belgium 2000 and Germany 2006 is very similar to Belgium and SA though so whilst the distance is probably a contributing factor it cant be fully responsible for the huge difference in figures. Police have done a lot of work on intelligence led policing in this area and extensive use of banning orders.
