Which was the first bowl type stadium in UK?

by Stuka » 04 Aug 2014 14:05

The Madejski Stadium, the Emirates, the new Wembley, all rounded bowl type stadiums, but can anybody tell me which was the first of this style in this country? It really does seem like very few new grounds are the traditional four-stands rectangular type.

I'd say either Reebok Stadium or Pride Park

soggy biscuit Riverside?

I'd go with that but it's going to be only a few years between the three named so far.

Been around longer than you think, especially in Scotland. BIG old grounds.

I read somewhere that the Don Valley athletics stadium [what's that, early 1990s?] was the first large outdoor sports stadium built in the UK after Wembley [1926?]. I'm not sure what to make of the gobbet of information though.

In terms of post Taylor Report, the riverside was built 1995, but it wasn't completed as a bowl until a few years later - it looked very much like The Brittannia does at the moment.

The Bescot and Glanford Park were both built around 1990 but I'm not sure whether they have seating in the corners.

If we're talking original stadia that were bowl-like in appearance, Old Trafford fitted the bill in 1909.

I always had Pride Park pegged as the first 'identikit bowl'

of course when they were built all the old grounds looked the same - one stand, three sides of terracing, a roof on the Popular side if you're lucky. in that sense EP was as identikit as the MadStad is.

I had the Stadium Of Light pegged as the first one. We played there in the abortion that was the 1997-98 season

Looks like it opened the same year as Derby and Bolton.

Yep - 'bowl' stadiums have been around for ages prior to the Soccer AM generation.

The Bridge 60s/70s

Old Trafford in the 80s

But when Stuka has made it clear he's talking about post Taylor Report stadia, Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford are irrelevant to the discussion.

Old Trafford wasn't too dissimilar to the picture I posted just after the Taylor Report and Stamford Bridge had changed a little....

So Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge were built after the Taylor Report?

OK

So it's probably Old Trafford then. As improvements were done prior to the Riverside being built in 1995. The new Den was the first of the new Stadia post Taylor (granted it isn't a bowl) as it opened in 1993.

I'd have said Huddersfield's McAlpine was pretty influential in terms of early post-Taylor stadiums.

The Mad Stad was based on the Reebok, albeit without their hefty steelwork budget.

Thanks for clearing that up then. The first new build stadium constructed after the Taylor Report in an enclosed bowl style was either Old Trafford or the New Den.
