Premier League at 25

by Sanguine » 15 Aug 2017 11:26

No, not a dewey-eyed look back at the birth of today's behmoth, although it was good to hear Brian Deane's recollections this morning of football 'back in the day' interviewed about scoring the first ever Premier League goal.

But I want some help with this poster, which was used to launch the league back in 92. Can we fill in the gaps?

Back row I'm good with - Hirst, Sharpe, Daley, Jones, Wright, Wark, Flowers, Sherwood.
Middle row - ???? (David?), Sutton, ????, ????, ????, ????, Hillier.
Front row - Charles, Ritchie, Salako, Sinton, ????, Strachan, Beardsley.

Wark and Strachan both still playing. Now I feel really old.

Isn't the Man City player (middle row left) David White? Are the Spurs and Sheffield U players David Howells and Andy Scott?

Leicester are the only side to have won the Premier League not represented in that photo.

Others that have won are:-

Chelsea
Manchester City
Blackburn Rovers
Manchester United
Arsenal

This is a good link.

Preston North End the only former top division winners not to have played in the PL.
Reading amongst six teams to have played in the PL having not previously reached the top division.

49 English football league teams (albeit one from Wales) have so far played in the PL.

And my favourite. Notts County and Luton resigned from the Football League having taken part in negotiations to form the PL, however they were relegated in 1991, and re-applied to the Football League for the 91-92 season.
