Question

by Winston Biscuit » 09 Sep 2020 15:48

Q. 2 football clubs have received Premier League parachute payments even though they have never played in the Premier League. Who are they?

Just a bit of fun, so don't be a nob and look up the answer

I'm guessing it would be the teams which were "relegated" from the old Div 1 to Division 1, ironically enough, when the restructure happened.

I'm a bit too young to know that without looking it up

But I'll guess Preston and Oxford, which may or may not be totally wrong :D

correct answer but wrong teams (Preston haven't been in the top division since the 1960's)

Lol, fair enough. I really did have no idea.

I've just looked it up, won't post it here though so others can have a go, but good quiz question :)

Luton had a couple of seasons when they had basically a play off to stay up...I think it was around that time

So whoever they played...want to say Man City but I think that's from the 80's...err dunno!

Coventry had similar 'stay up on the last day' seasons but think that was mid to late 90's

Answer is Notts County & Luton

Was surprised the reason behind the 2 teams getting it was in the first response. Am working my way through an audiobook by a football lawyer and this came up. I didnt think pp came in until much later.

lol just realised I not only didn't understand the question properly but thought the prem started in 92 i.e 91/92

Luton beat Sunderland that year to stay up on the last day...

Nah, Wolves, then moved to Cov but only for a season, then Inter Milan, which I had no idea he went there!

I remember Micky Quinn joining Coventry and scoring a hatful of goals from the off.

Just googling it, he scored 10 goals in his first 6 PL games, and his 13 goals/assists in his first 10 games in the PL was a record matched only last season by Bruno Fernandes.

And, Kilcline, Burrows and Borrows.

TBH it was the only way I could see it happening much harder to think back to the last Div 1 top flight season

FWIW Coventry were for a long time part of the "who has never been relegated from the top flight?" question favoured by football trivia back in the early '00s

So the Premier League paid the teams relegated from the first division in 1992 (Notts County, Luton Town & West Ham United) a “consolation” payment for missing out in joining the first Premier League? How ludicrous is that?
