Wasn't this supposed to be formality for United?

Hard to play football against a side that refuse to play football. Not knocking Villarreal, this style of play works for them, but it does make it really hard for the opposition to break them down and create chances.

Excellent penalties.....
Win or lose what a bunch of bottle jobs United are. Abysmal. How does Southgates lovechild Rashford get in the England squad. He has never really impressed me.

Penalties really aren't De Gea's thing.

Said before; just don’t see Ole winning United trophies

Albeit their bench was weak tonight but one sub in 110 minutes just isn’t good enough

Maybe a bit OTT here but think he’s overrated to somewhat extent

He has capabilities to perform well but also a tendency to have too many stinkers, just like tonight

So it's not just me then. He should have been hauled off after that miss. He just did nothing. Really poor management tonight. And to not use your substitutes when you can clearly see your team flagging really was criminal.

De Gea clearly has been an excellent goalie for United but his attempts at saving penalties tonight were pretty pathetic. Almost like having a child in goal - just collapses every time and doesn’t seem to really get close. 36 consecutive penalties have now gone in against him

I’m afraid a more tactically astute manager would probably have subbed him off for Henderson before the penalties were to be taken. Difference between a decent manager and a world class one there

Thats a very tough call to make, you'll end up shattering the confidence of the keeper you take off. The exception to the rule is if you have a penalty saving specialist in your squad, not sure that's Henderson tbh.
The other way to look at it is using the law of averages. Ole would have known De Gea's record on pens and would assume that has to change at some point. Sadly for him it didn't.

Agree on De Gea's penalty saving technique btw, horrendous. Made it so easy for the Villarreal players.

Think that’s half the problem, Ole is just too nice. Which, I guess, isn’t a bad thing in itself but it doesn’t win trophies

Saying that, the team should have had more than enough to get the job done so can’t just blame De Gea here

I found it odd that De Gea was embracing three of the Villa players in the tunnel before the game, if you know them or not you should be in a bubble, can you imagine Roy Keane doing that?
It`s ironic he missed the crucial spot kick.

One staggering stat this the 8th time a Spanish club has beaten an English side in a European final. Best league in the world 2nd in the premier league loses to seventh in Spanish league. European super league don’t make me laugh.

I don’t think it is OTT at all. Rashford is massively over-rated.

When he burst on the scene he excited me and yes he’s still capable of scoring goals but he just gets worse every year. Sad to see.

Obviously an all round good guy but I wonder whether his good works / projects have changed his perspectives / priorities - he doesn’t look like he particularly enjoys football anymore.

Not sure that football is No 1 priority to him which is fair enough, he is doing great work outside of the game, but if he is going to fulfill his potential as a footballer he maybe needs to focus on the game more.
