AthleticoSpizz That’s 3 out of 3 for ‘city’ isn’t it?.....a bit like last season.

No Mitch Parker etc. to desert them this time, but how long until the implosion and another ensuing relegation scrap?

From what I've seen they've not signed a load of money chasing superstars for the level this season so there should be hope for them that they can keep the squad together.

Obviously if they've unearthed a couple of crackers for that level there is a real threat that they'll get their heads turned by someone with a bit more budget, but I don't think they're throwing the money around like before.

...correct - I think they've picked up a fair number of recently ex-Flackwell lads, who have a proven success rate at this level. When I watched last week they also had Khalid Simmo - flying winger - who they'd picked out of the RFC Academy - and he certainly stood out.

Here's the round up of scores from this w/e NL.

Saturday 10th August

99 Fairford Town 3-2 Enfield 1893

152 Welling Town 1-4 AFC Uckfield Town
153 Hanworth Villa 3-2 Fisher
154 Beckenham Town 4-3 Raynes Park Vale att 65
- Got to this – just – M25 playing up as usual – part of the green & pleasant suburbia up between Bromley and Croydon – not that far from Crystal Palace.
- for a 4-3 was rather underwhelming – Becks ground into a 4-1 lead early 2nd half – had greater threat going forward. RPV woke up far too late and narrowed the gap to 1 in the final throes but were simply not at the same level and never really threatened to get parity.
- Home side reduced to 10 but it didn’t affect the balance of play unduly.

183 Shepton Mallet 3-1 Cadbury Heath
184 Bridgwater Town 1-0 Hallen

- Sunday PM headed up to Northampton for FA Cup tie Northampton ON Chenecks 2-3 Godmanchester Rovers
- The ‘ON’ stands for ‘Old Northamptonians’ and this is deepest Rugby territory – easily three times the spectators for the football were up in the posh clubhouse bar watching the ‘Egg-Chasing’ – it was a bit torrential but dried up eventually for a fairly decent tussle – the visitors from nr Huntingdon carried a bit more firepower.
- Air Ambulance landed on the outfield (shares with Cricket) to attend to a big RTA on the junction just outside the ground. News reports suggest later it was following on from Police pursuit of a stolen car.

Chalvey Sports 1-0 Wallingford Town
Didcot Town Development 2-0 Long Crendon
Milton United 0-6 Risborough Rangers
Penn & Tylers Green 1-2 Kidlington Development
Woodley United 1-2 Abingdon Town - minor surprise – Flackwell manager Marcus R’s kid-brother has taken over the reins at Town and gets a very decent away win for his first serious match in charge. Hope he can keep his squad together – rumoured to have included a lot from the TV/Reading Leagues.
Big test up next (tomorrow Tue 13th ) – H v very near neighbours Ab. United at Culver Rd - I might go, if I don't fancy one of the many FA Cup Extra Preliminary replays - of which there are close to 30 in total on Tue  - that includes about 10 relatively nearby too - and another half doz. or more the following night.
- Woodley bounced back tonight (Mon 12th ) with a close 4-3 win over Marlow Utd @ Rivermoor/Scours

- tonight (Mon) I trundled along to a game, in the division above and saw Binfield 2-0 Virginia Water att 171
- was actually quite closely fought and 'Moles' rather rode their luck (can a Mole ride? :? ) in front of their own area. Missed a pen late on which would have put an unfair slant on the game itself. Both keepers were in very good form on the night. Binfield a tad sharper in front of their opponents goal.
- still; important win and keeps them top, with 3 from 3.

Fri: Wokingham & Emmbrook 2-0 AFC Aldermaston att 183 - under ‘Sumas’ new lights at Lowther Rd.

WESS1
Andover Town 0-1 Newport (IoW)

105 Aylesbury P.V. 1-0 Royal Wootton Bassett att 204
- Was at this - tight affair in front of a big crowd - as scoreline suggests
- Vale down to 10 men with about 30’ left RWBT battered them but could force a leveller – lost a player of their own late on, following a very late and desperate lunge by a big CB to win the ball upfield.
- Ground is tucked away in the ‘crown’ of Aylesbury up in the north west 'quarter' - just off the A41 Bicester Rd – so bit of an awkward one for midweek – need to avoid Town Centre at all costs.
- Back home via Thame with BBC Baaarks fading in and out – none the wiser as to how our pen shoot-out @ Adams Pk had gone!

CCL1
FC Deportivo Galicia 0-6 Jersey Bulls – 'Bulls' head the table with 6 pts, 1 goal better off than other ’new boys’ Westside – who oddly enough are not staging their home games solely at Croydon – seem to be scheduled to play their Vase tie in a couple of weeks on a Sunday at Chess ‘n Hook?

NL Fixtures

Saturday 17th August

NAT
AFC Fylde v Woking
Aldershot Town v FC Halifax Town
17:20 Barrow v Yeovil Town - live on BT Sport
Dover Athletic v Torquay United - approx. 10hr round trip minimum – not the longest but on that combination of roads probably pretty harrowing and prone to lengthy hold-ups
Maidenhead United v Chorley
NATN
Brackley Town v Altrincham
NATS
Hungerford Town v Chippenham Town
Maidstone United v Slough Town
St Albans City v Dorking Wanderers – DW down to earth after three straight wins – battered 6-0 at Havant midweek.
Welling United v Oxford City

IL1-SC
Ashford Town (Middx) v Chalfont St Peter
Bedfont Sports v Hanwell Town
Chipstead v Bracknell Town
Marlow
v Barking - not quite sure how Barking have ended up in the 'South Central' section - presumably no room in the North and they were the most westerly near Dagenham, so got 'turfed' over ?

SLP-S
Beaconsfield Town v Farnborough
Hartley Wintney
v Harrow Borough

SL1-C
Aylesbury United v Corby Town - 'Ducks' still lodging at Chesham
Bedford Town v Thame United
Kempston Rovers v Didcot Town
Kidlington
v Daventry Town
North Leigh v Berkhamsted - rumours mid-season 18-19 of their intended demotion were premature - they did scramble enough points together in the last quarter of the campaign to send the other Aylesbury and one of the Dunstables down to South Mids.

Welwyn Garden City v Wantage Town
SL1-S
Basingstoke Town v Barnstaple Town @ Winchester City
Bristol Manor Farm v Winchester City
Highworth Town
v Frome Town

Bishops Cleeve v Malmesbury Victoria
Chalvey Sports v Abingdon Town @ Arbour Park
Clanfield 85 v Hereford Lads Club
Didcot Town Development v Holyport
Easington Sports v Virginia Water
Fairford Town v New College Swindon

- could be horrifying for the ‘Stundents’ of NCS
- presumably still struggling for numbers out of term time – not that they improved demonstrably last season after September.
- So far this season have played three league games; ALL away losing 0-13, 1-14 and 1-8 and a GD of -33 – and Fairford are Premier league – look away!

-
Faringdon Town v Brimscombe & Thrupp
Flackwell Heath v Marlow United
Hazlemere Sports
v AFC Aldermaston
Letcombe
v Tuffley Rovers
Longlevens AFC v Malvern Town
Lydney Town v Cirencester Town Dev'

Solent University v Tadley Calleva
WESS1
Andover Town v Fawley AFC
Petersfield Town v Andover New Street
Pewsey Vale
v New Milton Town
Whitchurch United v Verwood Town

- think our Plan A is to head off into the darkest hinterland of N.Essex somewhere between Braintree and Colchester, for Coggeshall v AFC Sudbury
- the hosts are jointly owned and sponsored by Olly Murs - and he gets to sit on their bench all -track-suited up  - when he's not touring presumably?

Went to Maidenhead today. Great game and win.

They couldn't go up could they? It was be incredible. They got some tidy players. That Josh Kelly and their keeper are very good.

Good to see Kelly doing well. He used to play for my son’s team when they were 9yo. And played for Windsor a few times when he was 16.

Saw the highlights of Maidenhead's game in the pub - good win for them.

Winchester City got our first ever point against Bristol Manor Farm - we were 3-1 down, away, with 15 mins left, but came away with a draw against a fancied side. I'll take that.

Meanwhile, Basingstoke Town had 268 at our ground for their "home" game against Barnstaple, but lost 4-3. Not a good start to life at Step 4, particularly as Barnstaple were only saved from relegation last season due to Street's resignation.

The bank holiday game between Winch and B'stoke should be a big crowd though.

Highworth Town
0-1 Frome Town
Thatcham Town 2-0 Willand Rovers - att 145 Kingfishers beat new boys in from the Western League.

- not a very distinguished start for our STEP04 featured sides - the only wins registered were by Ch St P, Westfield, Thatcham and Marlow.

- we picked up a 'new tick' in 'Norf' Essex
Coggeshall Town 3-1 AFC Sudbury att 212 - fairly pleasant new-ish build on the western edge of the Town - which sits off the A120 halfway betwixt Braintree and Colchester.
Boosted by an input of funds from their part-owner muso-celeb Olly Murs. He was present too; happily chatting to visiting fans and allowing selfies/signing things etc after the match.
- M25/M11 relatively OK though outward sh!te nr M4-M25 approach & again M40 jn -> Watford - meant our 'spare' time disappeared and we arrived close to KO and too late for the 'Anorak' staple-necessity of a prog. :|
- The 'Seed Growers' saw off their visitors from Suffolk without too much difficulty.

- intriguingly (or not  ) there is also a Coggeshall United - formed in 2017 ( :? !) by an ex-Dagenham/Histon/Billericay and Canvey Island player. They are known as 'The Weavers' & groundshare at Town's West St - not that there are any logos or badges about that I noticed -- originally members of the Essex Suffolk & Border League - they progressed to the Eastern Counties League, where they were runners-up last season.
- Their Wiki entry states : "they are the second largest club in Coggeshall after Coggeshall Town."

Banstead Athletic 0-3 Knaphill
CB Hounslow United 0-0 Molesey

0-3 Wokingham & Emmbrook nice to see the home club managed to raise a side for this tie.
- Their ‘firsts’ folded on the season’s eve and withdrew from Div One East but they do appear to have enough about them to run a side in Div Two North for 19-20 – where their Reserves were placed
- Hope they can sustain it – spent a lot of money on a lovely facility there and have been long serving members of the Hellenic since merger with the Chiltonian at the start of this Millennium

The Enfield Royal71 Went to Maidenhead today. Great game and win.

They couldn't go up could they? It was be incredible. They got some tidy players. That Josh Kelly and their keeper are very good.

Interesting that he's become a Northern Ireland U21 international this year. Saw him for Walton Casuals a couple of years ago in the FA Cup, and IIRC won and scored a penalty (a penalty I missed being given as I was too busy putting my drink in the bin  )
If i'd known then he was a Maidenhead loanee I would have paid more attention to how he played...

Been an incredible start for Maidenhead, was wondering too how far they could go this season. They've become more professional training 3 days a week at Bisham Abbey now. One of the players said it was like joining a new club. But the ground would prevent them from being eligible for the playoffs wouldn't it?

I think quite a lot have teams have that issue. Such a stupid rule.

Pretty surprised York Road is fit for the national league although its probably been done up slightly since i last went. It's a weird league with a true mix of pro and semi pro from well supported clubs to low 100's. Clubs not having good enough stadiums to go up isn't that rare in non league but when its in a league that really feels like a true mix of non league and football league its a little jarring.

I see Windsor's chairman has stepped down. I wonder what that means with regards to the set up at the club after there was a piece in the local paper with fans saying they were fed up with it! Ironically it's someone from Windsor Homeless project charity ( Called James Anderson!) which is what they fear Windsor could become with no lease sorted.

If they did pull off the miraculous, surely the could groundshare for a season? With Wycombe?

No way Maidenhead will go up. I went to the Chesterfield game a couple of weeks ago and they already look better than last season, to be fair. Just think there's stronger, full time outfits in the league that will eventually get the better if them. They tend to start seasons well then drop off but I do enjoy my visits down there if Reading aren't playing.

Yeah, if the miracle did happen then Wycombe would be the obvious choice but Maidenhead simply can't build on their current ground. Where would they go?

Was a regular at Maidenhead for many years when I lived in town. York Rd is the oldest football ground in the country, right? Would the ground actually close if they got promoted?

Anyone old enough to remember an old fan there called Harry who used to stand behind the goal? He wore an old hat and was very vocal well in to old age. I think he sold newspapers in town? He took a lot of abuse from younger fans, but usually took it well, though sadly he was attacked on a couple of occasions as I recall.

Anyway, I last went there to a game a couple years ago. What exactly would they need to have done to their ground for compliance for promotion? (I don't read the Advertiser much any more, so haven't heard lately).

Windsor 5-1 Holmer Green

Well that was better! Unexpectedly impressive performance after going 1 down although the scoreline was rather “unfair” on Holmer Green.
