Wouldn't surprise me if this just comes down to the league needing to authorise the deal. Just seen on Twitter that the Semedo deal is essentially done and waiting on the league to authorise it but if it takes much longer he may well go to a club in France instead.

I miss the days when we didn't know about a signing until it was announced. Morrison has been the only out of the blue signing I can think of in recent years.

The Morrison signing was so surprising even Gomes didn’t know anything about it. Just turned up at training one day in Portugal.

Wonder if, technically, a club could sue the league if the league’s failure to respond in a timely manner to a request to approve a deal meant that the deal collapsed and the player went elsewhere?

If I was the FL, or whoever, I'd have a documented procedure with a generous timescale permitted and a 'but we'll do it as soon as possible' within that.

Seems both Rangers and Celtic interested, too.

Celtic made an enquiry to buy, but his club wanted to tie him down
to a longer contract, then loan for a year hoping to get more money,
rather than let him go for a reduced fee or risk him going on a free.

If we miss this guy... shame

Surely the issue is the same soft embargo?

There were rumours that ‘talks ended badly’ with Semedo which probably means everything was agreed until we said ‘hold on while we get approval’

Mendes was probably holding on too long also!

Why else would we have Riquelme training this long and not signing?!

We do seem to be stuck in a one in, one out siuation now. We seem to need someone heading out to get anyone in. Issue is, to get in someone from abroad we only have to Monday but could well be that any players leaving will be domestic and unlikely to shift til after the 5th.

Conversely the Gibson loan seemed to happen reasonably quickly so these other delays might be due to some other “problem” rather than waiting on the FL.

True - it's all guesswork. Whatever it is, the delays will likely be down to money - either we aren't offering Atletico quite enough, or the deal is too expensive for the EFL. Gibson deal could well be close to "free" hence it went through quickly. Whatever will be, will be.

As you can imagine, Reading Twitter is having a collective breakdown about a player none of us have seen play, who we may now not sign but we still might based on one tweet from Alan Nixon, who is hit and miss at best when it comes to transfers.

Disappointing if true. We've made a good start, but sustained promotion challenge is a pipe dream without proper squad depth.

But then if we can find decent alternatives, not so bad.

P.s. if the one out, one in rumours are true, McNulty and Aluko have proven to be truly abysmal signings. Taking up Riquelme and Ng's spaces.

We now have the clearance to sign him, but it’s a “one out one in policy from here”. That bit is from exclusives. Looking through the gaps of the knowledge we have, providing Rodrigo still wants to come here we should be announcing him fairly shortly.

How does that square? I don't think anyone is due to leave imminently, in which case we don't get over the line.

It squares in that if the Riquelme deal has been ok'd, it is regardless of a player leaving but if we want to sign, say Semedo then a currently contracted player must leave.

We'll find out in the next week (or sooner) given the window closes for transfers between non-English clubs a week today.

If this is the case, why not finalise Riquelme already? Doesn't add up.

I don’t know how it reads to everyone else, I personally read it as we should sign him but he’s the last one we’ll sign without trimming the squad first. Worth noting Rodrigo had his medical before Gibson did.

Hmm as it’s loan is it not just a case of finding Sam Smith a club to loan him to? Shouldn’t be hard
