Speculation - Neil Taylor

by Royal_jimmy » 29 May 2021 13:01

32 year old left back who's been released by Aston Villa. Ex Swansea player. Could probably do a job for us for a season or 2 as we see if Bristow can make it at this level.

Would be an ok signing if his wages aren't too high.

Thoughts?

Really don’t rate him at all. So no thanks. It’s the sort of signing we have failed with in recent years.

1. He only played 1 PL game & 3 cup games for Villa this season. He didn't play much last season either because of injury. He's going to be pretty rusty
2. Age. You can get away with losing your pace better as a centre-back then as a fullback.
3. Wages.
4. He was never that good to be honest - basically a Championship level player clinging on in a PL team.

And 5. He broke Seamus Coleman's leg with a horror tackle. Booooo!

Lots of revisionism here. The idea that Taylor was "never that good" is laughable tbh, he's been a top-end player at this level for the best part of a decade.

His injury struggles are well documented but he seems to have been fit for the last few years, even if he has been struggling for game time behind Targett. And we know how well veteran left backs can do - Andy Griffin, Ian Harte, Stephen Kelly, etc.

I'd only put him on a one-year deal, but I wouldn't be at all disappointed if he came in. Giant asterisk next to that lack of match sharpness, but he'd be a great option at left back where we don't have a natural option.

Er... Kelly and Griffin were right backs, though Kelly played a bit of LB for us where he was rather shit.

Coming from Villa, he's going to have to take a mahoosive paycut, and we'd need to replace him in a couple of seasons anyway.

It's a big fat no from me.

Meant to say full backs - the point stands.

Fair enough, don't agree he's in any way the right sort of signing for us, but that's based purely on the situation now, not whether or not he was ever good.

On Taylor, if he is fit and willing to take wages in line with our budget then would be very happy with bringing him in on a 2-year deal with Bristow/Samuels as back up with a view to them taking over from him after those 2 years.

I think that Connor Ogilvie would be a preferred (and probably better) option.

Maybe he'll be on our radar. Underwhelming but he'll do until we can sign a proper left back or Bristow is ready to play every week
