NathStPaul Pete O'Rourke reporting we are in negotiations with Andy Carroll.

It is easy to laugh at Andy Carroll and call him a flop but on his day and when fit he is a force.

A fully fit Carroll could well score for fun at Champ level - given we can only sign him for a year on minimal salary, I would not be against it.

I can only assume the club don't think they can get in a loanee that meets the need today so are going for the best option free agent.

A mess on and off the pitch, would be a joke signing

I mean his injury record means he’d fit in well here.

These signings smack of desperation; Dai could be rolling his last dice

If (and it is a big IF), he has the desire still and stays fit, he is 100% one of the best strikers in the league. Would be exactly what we are after in a Joao replacement.

of course it's desperation, what else were you expecting? do you have any other suggestions? our hands are tied and this bloke fits the bill for what we are looking for. He played 22 times last season he only had the one injury last season a calf injury that saw him out for 19 days missing 1 game.

Less than a goal a season the last few years.

Fun.

Well deciding to even talk to a club like Reading who are the other end of the country from his hometown, when he knows the wages are probably barely going to be a tenth of what he was on at Newcastle, at least is a step in the right direction and shows some level of desire.

If he did sign who knows what will come of it, if he does well he’s probably going to be in demand next summer and able to go out on a high, if he doesn’t then it’s probably early retirement from the professional game. Either way Reading can’t be choosers in the current situation and certainly won’t be able to pay £££s or give a long deal so given Andy’s need to prove to himself, as much and anyone, that he can still play at a decent level I think it’s worth a shot.

He's currently on £0/week as he is without a club.

Thought he actually looked ok when I watched him for Newcastle last year

It’s desperation but then we’re desperate. I’m ok with it - like Dann, DD and Rahman, could work out and be brilliant or they could spend the season in the physio room

Well yeah...

Do you think people should celebrate every signing regardless of who it is?

No but they shouldn't instantly poo poo them either, especially with our striker options currently.

Just think when you're tight on spending and low on resources, now is not the time to gamble on a 32 year old with a poor injury record who hasn't scored many goals for years and is taking a step down to a shambles.

You want people who you can rely on to play, and be up for the challenge. Carroll might be up for the challenge, but do you see him giving a shit if things don't pick up? And you can't rely on him to be fit. He doesn't even score goals any more. 5 total in four seasons from dozens of appearances.

But people have heard of him and 7 years ago he looked good on MotD.

I get the concerns but we have very little room to play with in terms of wages - as far as loans are concerned we are reliant on the kindness of Premier League clubs to give us a player whilst covering the bulk of their wages. This means we need a club happy to get a player out because they want to see how fit they are after injury or because they want to put them in a shop window. With Drinkwater, he is OOC at Chelsea next summer, so they are probably doing the player a favour just getting him on a pitch.

If there is not a striker out there where the club are willing to help us out, we are left with the free agents market because we do need another body up top - we also want someone who can settle fairly quickly and fit the way we want to play - Carroll does that but the trade off of even having a chance to get him is that there is the risk he breaks down and is out for some time but I would hope there will be a pretty thorough medical before he signs - if a deal is there to be done.
