Korey Smith (Swansea)
Ben Hamer (Swansea)
Yan Dhanda (Swansea)

Is that THE Tommy Smith we were meant to have signed at least a dozen times over the past 20 years?

Or a different one?

I assume Ince would join, if no other takers.

I'm hoping that fans are now clued up enough to know that a transfer fee is only a part of the cost of a player. And because you can spread the transfer fee over the length of the contract, it might not be a huge part.

A player signed for £2m on a 5 year contract at £12k a week will have a lower annual cost on our accounts than a free signing we pay £20k a week.

Just seen Luke Freeman has been released by Sheff Utd. Always thought he was pretty decent, might be achievable for us.

Also seen Chiellini is leaving Juve. I think we should enquire.

I think you referring to the value of an asset being amortised on company accounts. The fee paid to sign them is amortised but not the wages.

£2M fee on 5 year deal is £400k a year. Add in the £624k a year wages and the annual value plus wages is £1,024,000
£0 fee on a 5 year deal is, obv, £0 a year. Add in the £1,040,000 wages and the annual value plus wages is £1,040,000

While the 'free' signing above comes out every so slightly lower on the annual company accounts, based on our simple numbers, in the real world there are a bunch of other fee's attached to players transferring which could swing it quite a bit either way (PFA contribution on the £2M player would be significant compared to the free signing for example)

Well yeah, I was just making a broad point that it doesn't take that much difference in wages for a 'free signing' to impact our accounts more than a player we pay a fee for. A lot of fans seem to be stuck in the 'transfer fee is the cost' mentality.

A few decent, experienced players on that list who wouldn't harm us, I just don't think many of them are up-and-comers who would look to take us forward. Tommy Smith, Tom Ince, Korey Smith, James Chester and Neil Taylor wouldn't be bad from the list.

Ben Foster is also leaving Watford this summer as well, would definitely be worth considering for a season to have an experienced goalkeeper between the sticks and will no doubt be a great role model for both Southwood and Boyce-Clarke.

I wonder if we’ll be offering Terrell Thomas a new deal. I’d be happy if we do.

Chester is quality but not sure he’s someone we should be pursuing given the options we already have.

Brown has loads of talent but seems like he’s had very bad luck with injuries.

Tom Carroll is 29 (!) and released by Ipswich. Just hasn’t worked out, has it?

Kristian Pedersen looks set to leave Birmingham at the end of his deal. Often looked a stand out in their very poor squad. Could be worth an offer as we need a LB.

Would definitely be behind that, wages dependent. Granted he was pretty poor against us back at the SLC when we won in March, but then again nobody judges off one game I suppose.

Strong in the air as well so should, in theory, help us at both ends with set pieces, where we've notoriously struggled.

Surprised Shane Long has not been mentioned on here under list of freebies.

Anyway, he’s not for pursuing. Have it on good authority he’s got a one year contract deal on the table at Southampton.

Anyone think we should offer Nyland a deal? I know he had the howler against Luton but we’ve had worse goalkeepers in the past. I tend to think we can do better but not sure who we can get.

No thanks, I think we can do better. Would like to get an experienced keeper in ideally who has played regular first team football. Would like us to have a word with Ben Foster, see if we can perhaps offer him a one year playing deal with a view to taking up a coaching role maybe.

Nyland - excellent shot stopper and reflexes, just terrible coming for crosses. Needs to work on that part of his game.

Wouldn't be too concerned if we offer him a new deal but wouldn't lose any sleep if we moved on and found another keeper.

Not sure I'd describe him as an excellent shot stopper, had one or two howlers in his limited time with us.

Agree with the majority though, wouldn't be massively disappointed whether we kept him or left him go. There probably are better options for us, but we could do worse as well.
