Who is the mystery striker?

by Stranded » 31 Aug 2022 08:26

So Ince saying he is looking at a striker and if he pulls it off we'll be surprised.

Mentioned some possibles on another thread but probably worth it's own one. Here are the runners and riders as I see them, including a couple of "surprising" names, that are unlikely perhaps or available:

Diego Costa - would be the biggest signing in Champ history - absolutely no chance you would think.
Frederik Gulbrandsen - Regular goal scorer in Austria, Turkey and Norway involved in a goal every other game through his career
Matej Vydra - my personal choice - still got regular PL minutes last year, only 30, fits our style.
Saido Berahino - was quality, could recapture some past glory in the right team
Mame Diouf - 34 now but was still banging them in in Turkey last season.
Daniel Sturridge - total left field shout given his issues in recent years but still a quality finisher in there - not sure his all round game would suit

Andy Carroll is obviously an option but wouldn't be a surprise IMO.

So who else could there be? Is there a PL striker who needs to get back up to speed, whose club may well want him on loan til Jan or for the season?

The surprise might be how bad they’re. I would have said Saido Berahino, Carroll or Zohore but no idea tbh.

Yeah, Berahino would be awful. Only got 8 goals in League One for Sheffield Weds.

Did he not say that it would be a permanent signing too not a loan. So I’m guessing the players on the list above would need to have a mutual termination of contract before signing.

Maybe we've finally landed Tommy Smith

With Baba signing, he did say that there is unlikely to be another loan signing but if something too good to turn down comes through then they'll have to consider it - so yes, if he is looking at one particular striker then we have to assume it is one who is a free agent/may get a contract paid up or their current club is willing to let them go on a free transfer.

Free agents don`t need to be signed by tomorrow so this could go on for a while.

Andy Cole would be quite surprising, free and knows Ince.

Reckon we will sell Jaoa and use his wages to bring in Andy Carroll on a one year contract.

Loving the Vydra suggestion, if only because Tim Dellor might actually explode

8 goals in 80 something appearances for Burnley. It’s a no from me. But it’s just wild speculation at the moment it could be anyone

Completely in the dark about it really, if it's Vydra then that would be ok. His record isn't great for Burnley in the PL but might be more suited dropping down a division.

If it ends up being Berahino then we may as well have not bothered, he's a bad egg with no great recent record, a bad combination.

1 in 2 striker at Champ level over his career.

Someone claims he is injured and won't be fit until the New Year, which, if true, probably explains why he is still available.

The surprise element might be that they are not a striker, or even a footballer.

I am going with Lou Bega
