On a slightly different tangent, as nearly all the manned stations on that line were to be shut down, Reading West and others have a stay of execution until December.

weybridgewanderer sandown race course, 2 trains an our stop at esher but on race days they stop loads of trains there that would normally be through services

so theoretically they could get the bournemouth and portsmouth trains that run fast to/from basingstoke to stop at green park on match days

Only if the platforms were long enough to deal with these trains.

8 carraige trains stop at chertsey which only holds 4 carraiges, you are told to allight using the front 4 carraiges only

similar problem on some platforms at clapham, at virginia water, isleworth.... this really isn't rocket science

3 stations on that line, Reading West, Mortimer and Bramley, what constitutes "nearly all"?

Any station built should be able to accommodate at least a 5 coach train, you rarely see stations built with a capacity less than this. So capacity shouldn't be a problem whatsoever. FGW should lay on 3 coach trains if they were to lay on special services. This will then be a train able to terminate at Basingstoke no probs.

Will getting a train from Reading station and then walking 20mins through Green Park actually be quicker than just getting a shuttle bus ?

Doubtful but it would be better for us West Readingers, would also mean not having to go to a shitty pub in town pre match

Agreed, if you're a Spread Eagle/Rose & Thistle/Westside drinker then the sooner the station comes about, the better

Maybe not. But it could be pretty good for those travelling up from the Basingstoke area if it meant they couldget off at Green Park rather than go all the way into town?

There are endless rules and regulations about stopping long trains at short platforms. Basically, in locations where it used to take place (before privatisation) it can continue to do so (so-called "Grandfather Rights"). Where traffic increases or the type of carriages changes, a new risk assessment has to be carried out. For new stations, the first choice is ALWAYS to make the platforms long enough for the trains that will use them. Only in special circumstances will long trains stop at short platforms at a NEW station, and then only by disabling the door-opening in the carriages which are off the end of the platform (thus causing all the passengers to have to file through the corridor until they reach a door which is on the platform).
Stopping the Virgin Cross Country services at Green Park is unlikely, because of the effect it would have on their timekeeping later in the journey.

I think the best we can hope for is to increase the 2-coach Reading to Basingstoke shuttle service to 3 or 4 carriages on match days.

Incidentally, there are no proposals to actually close Reading West, Mortimer and Bramley stations. Perhaps somebody is proposing to de-staff them, and close the booking offices?

The Network Rail website says that Mortimer station platforms are 82 metres long, and Bramley 76 metres, so the 4-car train should just about fit (with the front and rear overhanging slightly). The Network Rail Route Plan shows the work as being completed in 2007 - 08, but doesn't state the size of the station.

Hope this blizzard of facts helps!

Yup, that's what I said. They have already installed the less than reliable new ticketing machines which are already being subjected to vandalism and attempted robbery. People are wedging card into the coin slots to catch the money then pulling them back out again to receive the cash

http://www.getreading.co.uk/news/2013/2013812/the_train_now_arriving_at

The train now arriving at...
WORKERS in South Reading – and football fans – should be able to let the train take the strain by the end of next year.

The first privately financed new railway station in the South of England in 50 years is on track and coming to Reading.

PRUPIM, the property branch of Prudential, has applied to the borough’s planning applications committee to build the new £12million station at GreenPark.

The new station will operate on the Reading/Basingstoke line located on Longwater Avenue at the western edge of GreenPark.

Trains will run every half hour initially with the frequency increasing in line with future demand.

Park and ride facilities, short-stay parking, a taxi rank and a bus interchange are all part of the package.

Tim Davis of PRUPIM said: “Reading GreenPark station will underpin GreenPark’s position as one of the most accessible business locations in the country.

“It has been part of our long-term plan and reinforces our commitment both to sustainable development and the future of South Reading where it will benefit existing and new occupiers, residents and the wider community.â€

This is good news, will mean a ten minute walk to the R&T pre-match and then short trot to the station to get to the ground.

Interesting about the station and Green Park village. Shows a marshalling route from the station to the Mad Stad.

Does 'Park and ride facilities' mean that on matchdays, more car parking spaces will be available for those wishing to park at the station and walk to the ground?
