Are Reading really this bad?

by Forest Gump » 01 Sep 2007 17:25

Second deservedly heavy loss in a row; failed to score for 2nd premiership game; defence all at sea; no confidence up front.
So perhaps we deserve to be 3rd bottom? I know it's still early in the season but it we are going to survive something needs to change.

In the week Coppell was complaining about the effect of injuries/call-ups on the squad and the club respond by releasing more players on loan without apparently taking advantage of the transfer window before it closed.

Steve Coppell must be very concerned about his teams prospects. I know that I am. So someone give me a reason to be cheerful!

Last season some of the media suggested that we had 'over-performed' last season and I agreed. This was generally shot down though on here.

What we are seeing are players of borderline premiership quality (with the exception only of Doyle and Shorey imho) falling back from the high standards that were set last season, and as a result we are struggling.

We do not have, and have never had, the 8th, or even 12th or 13th best squad in the Premiership and this season was always going to be an immense struggle unless we invested in quality players, and to do so we had to be prepared to pay quality wages.

We lost Sidwell to our wage policy, and have been unable to sign players to improve the squad.

Result = 18th place and looking like relegation candidates.

only falling back from the high standards in the last 2 games

after the everton game everything seemed fine

the worring thing is that we seem to be going in the wrong direction....

i was expecting 0 points from the first 3 games and then hoping for 4 from the next 2

I'm turning off my computer so I can't read the stupid drivel that is going to precede this.

Good night.

On the positive side - Kitson and Convey looked good for the time they were on. Time to start them?

On the negative side, I thought Doyle and Shorey need to wake up, they have both performed much better than today. Hopefully, it will just take a goal to restore Doyler's confidence. Shorey looked ok going forward, but defensively looked off the pace.

I totally agree with you.

I don't think there is any need to panic. A good indication of where we are will be after the Derby game.

Sunderland A
Wigan H
Portsmouth A
Derby H

Beating Wigan and Derby at home is a must. Points off Sunderland will also be important and anything of Portsmouth is a bonus.

11 points off 9 games and everything will seem a little rosier.

Also agree that Kitson has to start next game - possibly Convey as well.

Disagree that we only have two premiership quality players.

I was going to write that 3-0 was an unfair scoreline given the possession and corners we had, but it could have actually been more. We matched them in many aspects of the game but they were substantially more incisive. For all our possession, we lacked the final ball and I don't think Green had to make a difficult save except for the penalty.

Our crossing was below par and corners were too close to the keeper or didn't beat the first defender. The deliveries got better when Convey came on. Our defence was often sliced apart with no-one near their runners.

I don't think we should panic yet. We're getting players back, and will give a team a sound beating before too long, which should hopefully ignite our season.

Look on the bright side though. At least we haven't got anyone on high wages for when we are playing in the championship next season.

I haven't felt this bad after a football match since we lost 3-0 to Bolton.

And before then, it was a good 2 years since a similarly poor performance.

Good post.

I will say this - and its been on my mind for ages. Doyle is an excellent Coca Cola Championship striker.

We don't have any players with any flair with Little injured and Seol gone. Today we effectively played with four central midfielders. As a result, the delivery from the flanks was shocking.

What is also shocking is the reaction of some fans. After two years of literally unprecedented success, I think the club, the management and the players deserve a bit of slack when we're on a bad run.

The two morons leaving Y23 screaming at Shorey to f**k off win today's prize as most fickle fans. Tossers.

Again - another good post. I will love this season - for the fact that every game is a must win - more than any.

Think Doyle has to be main candidate for losing quality so far this season.
