BFTG - Barnsley home

by PieEater » 11 Feb 2017 17:44

This game should of been a cert home win if we are to challenge for promotion but from the start you could see that we really weren't at the races.

On a freezing cold day the game had 0-0 written over it from the start. Barnsley had the best chances, hit the bar and the post whereas we had only one real chance all game that bought a good save from the keeper. Otherwise it was pretty bland pointless passing and incredibly shit shooting.

Not sure about the subs, taking off Kelly - our dead ball specialist - to play Grabban in midfield. Popa looked decent but should of been on for Beerens not GMac.

My MOTM was probably Moore who looked like he was trying to win the game single handedly.

Not entirely sure how that could be classed has a cert home win against a team that have won 7 on the road this season, not a bad team imo. first half poor, but second half better. a few good crosses from the right with nobody on the end of them. Barnsley looked strong at the back. easy to see why they are so good away from home.

Put my thoughts on the other thread but draw prob fair. Barnsley were well organised if not especially inspiring. MOTM for me prob Blackett.

Weather was very northern and horrible, be much happier when it warms up a bit

Well, no.

We're well clear of 7th and could still get promoted despite that result, so no it didn't need to be a cert win.

Meh. Not amazing but not a loss. Cold. Williams has little to offer and we lacked outright creativity Swift. Why was Grabban in midfield? And where was Mutch? Overall I'll take a clean sheet against IIRC the third best attack in the league but we've got to put on a show of some sort against Brentford. Also did anyone at halftime see that they named Meite's squad number as 17 even though its 19? Anyway ratings (5 is average for me) -

AAH - 5
Gunter - 5
Blackett - 6
Moore - 7
Obita - 7
Evans - 6
Williams - 4
Kelly - 5
McCleary - 6
Beerens - 6
Kermie - 6

Grabban - 6, Popa - 6, Meite - N/A

Uninspiring performance. Picked up a bit at the start of the second half but then tailed off again, not helped by the incorrect substitution of McCleary. Thought Obita was very poor.

Not sure on Stam's thinking bringing in a centre forward on loan only to play him in Midfield.

Hmm, how was obita very poor out of interest? Plenty played worse than him imo. Didn't see him do much wrong

Thought Barnsley looked really shaky in the first 15 minutes, and we really should have made them pay for it. As we didn't they grew into the game and had spells in each half where they looked threatening and probably derserved a draw. Although BBC RB were praising the defence, I thought I we played like that against a Huddersfield or Brighton, we would let in 3 or 4.

Thought Stam got the substitutions all wrong. Firstly, what was Grabban doing in CM? Thought the game was crying out for Meite, came on 25 minutes too late. Don't know why Swift wasn't used either.

Yep agreed on the subs. Meite for Beerens after an hour or so was a no-brainer imo

Not generally a fan of Blackett, but fair fcuks today, he made some crucial defensive contributions.

But ruined it by being uncertain on the ball and losing it in some key areas

Brrr it was cold.
Typical Championship game; lots of effort but just when some quality was required; both teams came up short.

Until Danny's shot late on we never looked like scoring-despite four times getting close in the box 2nd half-while they nearly scored twice.

Al Habs 5: One horror moment in 1st half-but TBF mainly a statue.
Gunts 7: Got forward more often than of late and twice should have done better in the opposition box.
Obita 6: Had his problems-but always an option going forward.
Moore 6: Had his problems.
Blackett 8 : MOM immense in defence, couple of poor passes.
Evans 6 : Having essentially five at the back didn't help
Williams 6: Best effort on goal;but too often on the back foot.
Kelly 6: Worked hard, but short on inspiration
Beerens 7: Always a threat
Kermit 6: Good and bad
Macca 6: again not at his best

Grabham 6: Why play him as inspiration in midfield, when we had Swift on the bench

Too many lobbed crosses, rather than driven ones & oh the pitch was the worst I have ever seen it at this stage of the season-bring on the heavy roller.

Ref average and inconsistent, but compared to recent weeks wasn't poor.

Still confident of top six

Only one real chance all game?!! Did you spend a lot of the game trying to keep warm in the concourse?

Keeper made great saves from Kermorgant and Beerens. We wasted numerous other great opportunities when well placed. Gunter twice (maybe one was a penalty?) McCleary, Williams (at least twice) etc.

What a load of crap that was, far too deep and the continued passing backwards in our own half is so boring. Teams have sussed us out and just sit back and wait till we balls up and get us on the counter attack . Thankfully Barnsley were as crap as us. We simply don't play like a team that is or was third in the Championship . An afternoon to forget

Not saying we didn't have chances, just one that we should have scored.

As for the "shot" from Gunts, just lol.

You like most of our fans are so negative. It's pretty much nailed on that we won't throw away an 8 point gap over 7th

I must have been at a different match.

Aside from a couple of brief periods in the first half where everyone kept giving it straight back to Blackett, I thought we were ambitious and expansive with our passing. There was a clear increase in the risk taking and forward passing; we nearly scored in the first minute with an old fashioned route-one hoof! Our movement was very fluid, so there was nearly always someone available for a pass. Unfortunately there were a few occasions when that meant players like Gunter and Moore were receiving forward passes from McCleary and Kelly. Meanwhile, although Barnsley weren't fantastic, they were very well set up and looked a genuine threat on the counter attack. I found it very compelling, end-to-end stuff.

MOTM has to be Barnsley's manager although I suspect it may have ended up being Kelly if he'd played the whole match. Beerens was the pick of our players. Very strange subs from Stam, I wouldn't have taken off Kelly or stuck a striker in midfield and McCleary should have come off much earlier after one of his worst performances of the season.

Good to see Angus MacDonald back at the Madejski - I'll hold my hands up and admit I never thought he would play at this level but he put in a solid performance.

Not a big fan either, especially not when he is at full back but today he was excellent
Positioning great, several key interceptions and very strong on the ball. I'd say his best game for Reading
