Unauthorised data gathering / Texting during games

by Forbury Lion » 12 Aug 2019 08:29

Apparently a Hull City Season ticket holder was threatened with ejection for texting during a game, part of a crackdown on unauthorised data gathering.

If the next home game is crap I might pull my phone out and start rating the players 5 or lower during in the hope that one of the stewards takes pity on me and ejects me.

On a serious note, I had no idea it was illegal to gather data without authorisation (who reads the terms and conditions anyway?).

Reading's Ground Regulations are here (but clearly out of date going by some of the references to the Premier League...).

Ref mobiles, it states:

16 Mobile telephones are permitted within the Ground, provided that they are used for personal and private use only PROVIDED THAT no audio, visual or audio-visual material captured by a mobile telephone may be published or otherwise made available to any third parties including, without limitation, via social networking sites.

Can't see anything there which would stop you texting or posting to social media as long as it doesn't contain photos, video or audio taken in the ground.

There's also this, but it doesn't apply to mobile phones.

19 Save as set out in paragraph 16 above, no person (other than a person who holds an appropriate licence) may bring into the Ground or use within the Ground any equipment, which is capable of recording or transmitting (by digital or other means) any audio, visual or audio-visual material or any information or data in relation to the Match or the Ground. Copyright, database rights and any other intellectual property rights in any unauthorised recording or transmission is assigned (by way of present assignment of future rights to the Club and The Premier League. You further agree (if and whenever required to do so by the Club and/or The Premier League) to promptly execute all instruments and do all things necessary to vest the right, title and interest in such rights to the Club and The Premier League absolutely and with full title guarantee

How ridiculous, and impossible to police. Whoever told the stewards to take action over this needs a warning of their own.

A pen and a notepad would technically qualify as equipment capable of recording visual information or data in relation to the match or the ground.

"Technically" it wouldn't. Much like court sketches.

Could you imagine poor old Albert being slung out for ticking off the team sheet on the back of the programme :(

I missed the part about transmitting.... I guess if you write it down you're not transmitting, unless you stick it in a fax machine or take a pic on your phone in which case the fax or phone will be the banned objects.... would a paper aeroplane flow out of the ground count as transmitting?

"by digital or other means" - I guess that rules out phone calls too, but...... a pigeon is a creature, not equipment so if we go old school we can send courier pigeons to our friends and family with score updates, assuming we can smuggle them into the ground (to be fair, we may not need to as I don' t think they're not on the banned items list)

Can't make phone calls either, because the other person might hear what's going on.
