10 most iconic non-football Madstad moments

by Fox Talbot » 19 May 2020 16:38

Inspired by the mention of those nodding helicopters - see moronic fan thread - here's a couple to get going with.

FIVE BEST MOMENTS

1, The nodding helicopters and the one hell of a noise they made
2. June Whitfield's rendition of 'Terry and June' from the centre circle v Stoke 2000
3. Kingsley getting booked by Mike Dean (or is that football?)
4.
5.

FIVE WORST MOMENTS

1. Lady Sasima and her song v Leeds 2018 (?)
2. Minute's silence for death of King of Thailand
3. (In retrospect) Stuart Hall doing the Madstad opening ceremony
4.
5.

STRICTLY NO RUGBY

What about that little bird from Strictly strutting her stuff on the pitch?-the highlight of that season for my brother's best mate who is a great fan of whoever she is.

Wasn’t a great gig.

Fondly remember around the same period being at the Madejski for when we won promotion at Brentford. Club erected a large and heavily pixelated screen on the pitch for those of us who couldn’t get a ticket.

But way better than the Elton John snoozefest..

For tens of thousands the finish of the 1/2 marathon in the stadium would Be a highlight. A lot of runners I know reckon it’s one of the best finishes to any of this type of event.

Little known fact, the Madejski was used for the cover shot of Football Manager 2005.

The nodding choppers - Lynx and a Gazelle, one in each half of the pitch delivering the match ball (we may have had another delivery by Lynx only at another game), Thanks to the Army.
The World Record height abseil from a helicopter (Sea King IIRC)
Reading Half Marathon
Parachute delivery of match ball v Luton Town
Mr Woo aka Jake the Dog
Mr Woo
PANTS day
11th November minutes silence
9/11 Minutes silence before the West Ham game - Those who were there will never forget that one, such strange scary day.
The hoops around the ground where we all held up a white or blue sheet of plastic
Rumblesticks (one for the worse list)
Mexican wave as Champions
106 Season pitch invasion
Brian's championship win pitch invasion

Take issue with the fan picnic. Thought it was a brilliant day, my kids absolutely loved it, despite the weather and they came away with some amazing memories.

That it would. Just from my experience, it was a great afternoon. To recreate goals scored, have their lunch in the penalty box where they see goals scored, to sit in the dug outs, all free of charge, was a great gesture by the club. Shame its not been repeated.

Beard days were brilliant.
I often wonder if any other clubs have anything quite so surreal.
Fun goings on at theR&T, crazy v bus journey to the ground
Entrance always nicely timed to be after kick, off and cause maximum ‘what the hell’ reaction
Beard Band
Foootball it’s self almost irrelevant, most participants had little if any interest in the game

Beard Day...another great shout Nameless....and yes, I (and my then, kids) were in the “what the hell” camp.

Sat just a few columns away, it looked great fun and the total antithesis of what was probably going on, on the pitch

I think I went to 3 and even being involved I really had little idea what was happening. It was never clear if it was all brilliantly choreographed or totally spontaneous. I think it was a group of uni mates who started it and people came from all over. Maybe the most brilliant thing was it stopped just when it became a ‘thing’. Very Fawlty Towers
