Players’ relations

by SCIAG » 14 Aug 2020 09:29

In response to a suggestion that we sign Trevoh Chalobah on loan, FDTW joked that we go for a whole team of relations of ex-players.

Here’s my attempt:

Nikolay Mihaylov (Son of Boris)

George Baldock (brother of Sam)
Nacho Fernandez (brother of Alex)
Trevoh Chalobah (brother of Nathaniel)
Gilano Wijnaldum (cousin of Royston Drenthe)

Gigi Wijnaldum (ibid)
Juninho Bacuna (brother of Leandro)
Ryan Gravenberch (brother of Denzell)

Theo Walcott (cousin of Jacob)
Rajiv van La Parra (cousin of Drenthe)
Giovanni Drenthe (brother of Royston)

Subs: Simon Moore (brother of Stuart), Jake Forster-Caskey, Tom Soares

All I can say is thank goodness the Dutch footballing community is so small. There surely has to be a better option than Drenthe Jr up front, and using Walcott and Soares is a bit cheeky given their relatives never actually played for us. But no doubt that side would beat us quite comfortably.

Over all time, that team could be even stronger. For example, Rio Ferdinand would stroll in at centre back. And of course we’ve had several related players play for us, like the Hunts, the Millses, the Keowns, the Wagstaffes, Ingimarsson/Thorvaldsson, and of course the Webbs.

Denzell Gravenberch, there's a signing I'd forgotten about. The striker with (still) just two career league goals, and none for six years now.

He was a centre back when he played for us. His brother is by all accounts a much better player.

Martin Allen (son of Dennis)
Clive Allen (nephew of Dennis)
Bradley Allen (nephew of Dennis)
Paul Allen (nephew of Dennis)
Les Allen (brother of Dennis)
Charlie Allen (grandson of Dennis)

Fantastic league two relegation side that!

IN for the name.

Sounds like a cross between Kill and Cyril.

Nice one Kirril, nice one son.

We had 3 generations on the books - I believe Josh Webb was also in the system

Yes, you are right. Pity he didn't play for the first team. Three generations playing for the same team, would have be pretty rare, especially if they all made their League debuts for the same club. Pity he was sent out on loan, before he had a chance. Are there any more three generations who have or are playing League football?

Just seen Neil walking down Dark Lane .Our generation use to call his Dad ,Dougie. He was a fan favourite ;albeit we use to give him a fair amount of leeway on his performances. However in those days in the old Div 3 & 4;we didn’t expect much. Was it Dougie who went on to run a Newsagents near Langley Hill or was it Maurice Evans ?

That’s a good shout. Put her in as the centre forward ahead of Drenthe/Pogrebnyak.

Cyril Beavon (Oxford U) father of STuart (Reading) and grandfather of Stuart Jnr (Wycombe) - three generations for players of local rivals.

Think it was Mike Dixon who had the newsagents.

Bumping this to update, because I keep discovering more close relations of our players who are professional footballers.

Tom Ince is obviously the son of Paul Ince.
Naby Sarr is the son of Boubacar Sarr, who played for Marseille and PSG. Despite what Wikipedia says, he is not the brother of Ismaili Sarr. He's also not closely related to Mass.
Tom Dele-Bashiru has a brother Fisayo who is a midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday.
Femi Azeez has a brother Miguel who is a central midfielder, on loan from Arsenal to Ibiza in the
Michael Olise has a brother Richard, a right back for Chelsea U18.
Louie Holzmann is the nephew of Jake Cooper
Michael Craig's twin brother still plays for Spurs.
Joe Lumley's brother Billy previously played for Northampton and Maidenhead
Alen Halilovic (remember him?) is the son of Sejad Halilovic who played for both Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. His brother Dino is a former Croatian youth international midfielder and currently plays in the Dutch second division.
Anton and Les Ferdinand have a cousin, Kane Ferdinand, who kicked around the lower leagues a few years ago and is now at Maidenhead. Also at Maidenhead is Rohan Ince, third cousin once removed of Tom.
Reading Women striker Natasha Dowie is the niece of Iain Dowie. She is married to Becky Easton, who won 44 England caps at right back.
Finally, two members of the Icelandic women's team have Reading connections. PSG striker Berglind Björg Þorvaldsdóttir is the sister of Gunnar Þorvaldsson (and therefore the cousin of Ivar Ingimarsson). Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Karólína Lea Vilhjálmsdóttir is the niece of Gylfi Sigurðsson.
