MATCHWATCH : Peterborough United (a)

by Sutekh » 19 Nov 2024 10:12

When : Saturday November 23 2024, 3pm
Where : Weston Homes Stadium, London Road, Peterborough, PE2 8AL
Capacity : 15,314

Reading take their utterly dreadful away record over to Peterborough for what is expected to be another difficult game and possibly another stuffing, if the Posh's 6-1 hammering of an improving Cambridge, in their derby game last time out is anything to go by.

After pretty much 2 weeks off, and the glory of not getting turned over in the club's last away game, Reading will be looking to extend the unbeaten away trail to 2 games for the first time since last April (their best run since managing 3 away games unbeaten in February). However it will be difficult as Peterborough are one of the better sides in the division, despite being 2 places and 2 points behind Reading in the table, and Reading's record at London Road is pretty execrable,

As with most clubs over the summer Peterborough used something called a transfer market to try and improve their squad (never heard of it myself but there's some that swear by it). They brought in 4 players on loan, including 2 from Man City, and 8 permanently including what looks to be a promising Swedish central defender called "Tiger" Wallin.

The threat to cut off though is 10 goal (from 15 starts) midfielder Kwame Poku who seems to be becoming yet another on their never ending conveyer belt of really rather good goalscorers (and thus attracting interest from Rangers). He's netted 5 more than their next highest scorers Malik Mothersille, another midfielder and the much in demand forward Ricky Jade-Jones (rumoured to be heading for Sheffield United in the new year for another few million). They would also seem to be rather good with set pieces as defender Emmanuel Fernandez is not too far behind Mothersille, which suggests Peterborough will be a complicated opponent that need a lot of organisation to keep quiet.

So definitely the proverbial "rip your arm off for a point" game if it was offered.

Reading should have had some improvement on the injury front after the lay off but are still waiting to see what state Tyler Bindon and Basil Tuma return in. Dorsett returned before the tedious international break and didn't appear to suffer any reaction from his games. Abrefa, Yiadom and WiFi all remain sidelined but there may be a possibility of Smith returning in some capacity if all goes well for him this week.

Nothing

Historically

This is the 20th season shared with the team that’s posh but not royal, with the first league game being a 3-2 home win for Reading back in 1961.

Reading have managed just 2 wins (2001 & 1967) from the 19 previous league visits and of the other 17 league appearances at London Road 10 have been lost so visiting this part of Cambridgeshire isn’t exactly noted for being a happy place for the Biscuitmen. The last league win there was 23 years ago in November 2001.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel to the game
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Just a question of whether it’s the ‘brave’ defeat where we play well and go down by a goal or the 3/4 goal hammering

They’ve scored loads of goals ( second top) but have conceded more than almost everybody.

Not sure what that means for us.

They’ve scored 14 in their last three home league games. Plus 4 more in an EFL Cup game.

Well, I'm going to this one, currently unbeaten away (only been to Stevenage), not overly confident for this one.

I think we might scrape a 1-0 win.

Anything better than a 3 goal deficit is a decent result.

I would count it as a point gained rather than 2 lost if we get a draw, but not expecting anything.

Means we lose 4-2 instead of 4-0.

Going down the route of pretending this match doesn't exist and just checking the result at some point after. Never a good place for us to go.

And there’s Barnsley to follow on Tuesday, so now might be a good time for a week’s holiday somewhere.

Have they got undersoil heating? I'm 40 miles from Peterborough and it's been sub zero day and night since Monday.

Remember going there from uni on a midweek night in 2011/12 after we went on a run of P10 W9 D1 L0, with them almost relegated. Only for us to get pumped 3-1 in a run that consisted of 2 defeats in 19 games.

Went to the 2-0 defeat at Birmingham as well...

Forecast is showing highs of 12C on Saturday, albeit with rain and strong winds.
