Nicky Shorey

by roberto_11 » 23 Jul 2006 10:19

If Shorey plays to his full ability this season and aviods any injuries, can anyone else see him getting in the England squad before the end of the year? The only competition I can see is Bridge (injury prone, not a 1st team regular) and Konchesky (overrated).

The thing that will put people off Shorey is his lack of pace. His positioning makes up for that against all the but the very best players.

If he handles himself in the Prem then he will get at least one cap, but I can't see him being consistently picked ahead of Cole and Bridge.

Would love to see one of our players representing England, and Shorey is without doubt one of our best players, but he has yet to prove himself in the Premiership. Only then will we be able to say whether there is a reasonable chance that he could take the step up to international level.

Against a top winger his lack of pace will always been shown and he'll have to become the best players in the world to make up for it. Sadly you look at most modern full backs, mainly left backs and their games are built around pace and power. With England obviously their's Cole, Bridge and Konchesky. I love Shorey, but he'll have to make a hell of a step up to ever be in their class.

The only one of those I'd rate above him is Ashley Cole. Paul Konchesky is shit.

LOL. They're all proven Premiership players which is something Shorey isn't.

Kevin Doyle, Ibrahima Sonko and Leroy Lita weren't proven Championship players a year ago - your point being?

With enough injuries he might be in with a shout.

A great season with Reading playing to the best of his abilty every game certainly won't do any harm.

Also, with the lack of English strikers I would suggest Kitson and Lita might attract some interest from Steve McLaren if they manage to bang them in regularly.

Bridge used to be very good but injuries and lack of 1st team football hasn't helped him
Konchesky is one of the most overrated players in the Prem
Barry hasn't played left back for years he plays left/central midfield for Villa
Warnock possibly but has to improve

Shorey is good from set pieces and has been solid for us for 4/5 years now, I think he will make the step up with ease and be a star.

Warnock is average at best and has hardly played any first team football.

Saying that Shorey won't get anywhere near the England team unless he vastly improves and theres major injuries to Cole and Bridge.

Shorey's a better player than him. Baines probably has more pace but Shorey will get more assists than him in a season.

Shorey for England? Have to wait and see but I wouldn't hold your breath.

He is nowhere near the England squad, he's behind at least Cole, Bridge, Konchesky, Taylor, Barry, Baines, Carragher and Warnock.

The major reason, no pace. He would be absolutely embarrassed on the International stage.

You imagine what Robben and Ronaldo and Simao and Joaquin and Ribery and Ronaldinho and Kaka and van Persie and many more would do to him. Would be a massacre.

Next season we have to accept the likes of Ronaldo and Robben and Lennon and Benayoun are going to rip him apart. And just hope he can do a job against no marks like Darren Ambrose and James Milner.
