Plastic celebs on BBCB

by Dirk Gently » 19 Aug 2006 09:47

Ollie - can you make sure that if Andrew Peach is going to try and dig up celebrities who want to tell the world how long they've been Reading fans that they at least mkae sure they do their homework first?

Then we won't have to endure Chris Tarrant telling us how he remembers "going and watching the Biscuit Boys" (sic) like we had yesterday.

In all of his broadcasting career he's never mentioned Reading FC once, then suddenly we're successful and he can't wait to jump on the bandwagon.

Please don't give him and others the means to do this.

Excellent point Dirk. I was talking the other week to a very well known film actor - he's been to the Madejski a few times to watch, his brother used to be a regular, not sure if he is now and he has also played there in a celebrity match. He had some really nice things to say about RFC and the whole set-up. He doesn't profess to be a fan, I can't remember if he's Chelsea or Arsenal, but his parents live between Reading and Basingstoke and he knows his stuff. That's the type of "celebrity" you want to talk to.

Keep Uri Geller off the airwaves.

As for celebs, Let them phone or text in like everyone else.

Oddly enough, it's my understanding that Chris Tarrant did indeed phone in like everyone else...

Fair enough then.

I look forward to hearing the text from Ricky Gervais of Whitley read out after the match.

Was he really from Whitley? The place is universally seen as a guaranteed laugh in the stand-up comedy circuit.

His mum and dad are dead iirc. His brother still lives in Whitley area though I think.

Unless of course you were talking about Tredder. In which case, you are correct!

I'd like to point out that if George Michael phones in declaring his support for RFC then fair enough - I've seen him in the East Stand a number of times, including a midweek league cup game against Peterborough.

Tredders daughter lived in, until very recently, Ricky Gervais's childhood Whitley home.

Fact.

B*gg*er me, they only went and repeated Tarrant's "biscuit boys" comment today as a "highlight of the week."

Until we got to the Premier League he's never mentioned Reading FC and he's always had ample opportunity to do so, so don't let this bandwagon jumper use RFC to inflate his profile, regardless of whether he phones in or is phoned.

Biscuit boys my arse.

People aren't half precious about things to do with Reading FC these days!

I mean really, who cares? What on Earth is there to get het up about even if Tarrant can't even name a single player? I don't get it!

Down through the years only real celebrity fan we've ever had was John Arlott.

Recently though its only been Uri plus a story that Ian Gillan tried to buy us once.

IMO the more celebs that decide to 'support' Reading the better as it can only help our overall profile.

Heard that Chris Evans had declared a 'liking' for our little club when Andrew Peach was talking to Murts this morning so its good to see word spreading and 'celebs' attaching themselves to us.

By the way Ollie, can you get Michael Parkinson on at some point in the future to talk about how far his attachment goes back as we still think he's really a Barnsley fan even though I think he's been a ST holder for a few seasons now.
