Re: Womens euros 2025

I think part of the problem may be that the overall standard of goalkeeping in the women's game is pretty poor - so players never really have to develop penalty-taking skills to any great standard in order to be successful with penalties. But when they come up against 'keepers at the top clubs/coun...

Re: Womens euros 2025

Just a basic headline analysis. I know this doesn't answer the question per se, but let's put some facts on the table first. The average success rate in men's World Cups appears to be a shade over 70% (i.e. in a 10 penalty shootout, 7 get scored). I don't have the numbers for Euros, but as this WC t...

Re: Womens euros 2025

I would go with a firm yes.

But if you want me to have a look at the stats, well, so be it. I have a feeling they're going to get Bayesian.

Re: Womens euros 2025

Would you guys agree with me that the next area of big development will be in the strikers, which across the board seems to me to be a relatively weak area? I know there are some who put in consistently decent numbers, but there's nobody who really looks really top class in the way that AKB, Bonmat...

Re: Womens euros 2025

Bit of a shame for the otherwise outstanding AKB that her error (if it can be called that when it was really a piece of brilliance by Bonmati) cost Germany last night but the general standard of goalkeeping in this tournament has been excellent. I predicted that would happen a few years ago, now I ...

Bowler looks a reassuring 'yeah, that should work' signing - player with some reputation in the level above but available for one reason or another.

Re: Squad for 2025-2026

According to Twitter people at Bearwood earlier, we're waiting for international clearance from a player currently playing in the Bundesliga. Brogue mentioned this last week. People speculating that it could be Scott Banks or Oladapo Afolayan, both at St Pauli. I'm sure there's a St Pauli fan on HN...

Zana Badawi
poohs pure
This is the post of a cnut that has no friends and it's sat at home having a conversation with himself, imagining there is a reasoned debate going on amongst a number of in the know types.

Yeah, we kind of worked that out when he resurrected a 5 and a half year old thread.

Re: Squad for 2025-2026

Craig was a big success in the midfield role in 23-24 and, while we needed him elsewhere last season, I think we really missed his presence and grit in the middle at times.
The starting midfield last season was often very lightweight.

Re: England - the future....

Carrick You're funny  The tempo setter of a team that made 3 CL Final appearances in 4 years The English midfielders in the 2008 final were Carrick, Scholes, and Hargreaves (& Lampard). It always baffles me that in the Elite Club Cup tournament final England was represented by Brown, Rio, ...

Re: England - the future....

The other, related, bit to bear in mind is how poor England had been in these tournaments for a long time. U-21s - pair of wins in the mid80s, followed by two losing semi-finals. Lita-inspired in 07 to a semi (ARF!), losing finalists to a very good Germany in 09. 2017, which I should remember more o...

Re: England - the future....

Sutekh So what happens to the players between playing for the u21s and then migrating to senior level?

When is the next u21 World Cup?

It alternates, iirc.

World cups are U-20 and U-17
Euros are U-21, U-19 and U-17
olympics are nominally U-23 but don't happen every cycle.

Re: Squad for 2025-2026

Yeah there's a fair amountnof flexibility obviously. But it really highlights where the holes are CB and forwards. Dorsett is a CB though, no? I remembered him more as a LB but that may simply be as a result of not having any so him having to play there. Originally a CB but we had no-one else in 20...

Re: Squad for 2025-2026

Mbengue feels like a big loss - a key part of the squad both on and off pitch. We tried to keep and he decided to take a different challenge.

Wareham never felt like he was quite good enough, bet he scores against us next season.

6ft Kerplunk U21s through the final.

I really enjoyed that game - the winning goal a pretty solid way to decide a game.
