Re: World Cup Pundits

Jermaine Defoe is a fairly regular pundit on Match of the Day, not sure if he is covering the World Cup. He is excellent and I prefer him to Jermaine Jenas. As for Lee Dixon and Chris Sutton I actually find them offensive. During the FA Cup run Dixon in his punditry was obsessed with "if he is ...

Re: Who do you think will win WC2022?

I can't really see anyone beating France for the remainder of the World Cup following their second string team's loss to Tunisia. I don't think the latter result means an awful lot in terms of France's future performances. The thought of Mbappe against Maguire and Stones - should it happen - well, f...

Re: World Cup Pundits

Defoe has also made me face up to a prejudice I have which is that people who wear so much bling are kind of knobs.

Re: World Cup Pundits

Dion Dublin's ridiculous gags that always, always involve a sort of adolescent humour and inane laughter rub me right up the wrong way. Shearer and Lineker I find incredibly dull which may sound cruel but is true. Danny Murphy is a bit surly but at least makes the effort to illuminate things to both...

Re: What team is most similar to Reading FC

If you look at some of Man United's managerial decisions in the past few years they make Terry Bullivant look like an inspired appointment.

Re: What team is most similar to Reading FC

For me, over the past few years, the Manchester United team since Sir Alex left - constant false dawns, some decent players who can't play together, erratic results, dodgy signings and weird away kits.

Re: BFTG - Watford

Blimey. A Darren 'who ate all the pies' Caskey reference. Blew hot and cold but was probably one of the more talented midfielders from Reading's past. Not entirely sure he was ever that bothered though.

Re: The generic transfer thread

Haaland and Pogba would be truly spectacular signings. I strongly suspect they will both happen. I keep expecting to hear that Guardiola has an interest in Olise but to be honest I do think a lot of completely misconceived, excitable nonsense when it comes to transfers.

Re: Players that share running styles

That description of Dylan Kerr's running style is spot on and I have a very vivid recollection of him running in said style up the left wing. Did he not also often have his head cocked forward like a chicken but in the attitude of a puppy expecting a treat? He was a bit of a footballing menagerie wh...

Re: Weekend Football

Regarding Palace vs Chelsea today: aside from the fact that it was pretty turgid it made me question again Jordan Ayew. He seems almost Simon Church-like whenever I see him play.

Re: Finger wagging at referees

I can see a potential VAR saga coming on as decisions have to be made as to whether the finger was really being wagged or if it was just (rather like Boris attending a party) inadvertent and done with no conscious intent. I guess if VAR proves it was a bona fide insult then the ref could go ahead wi...

Re: Players that share running styles

There have been a few Reading centre backs over the years with a unique 'non-running, running style'.

Re: Finger wagging at referees

Why would you have to pull out the cards and the finger puppet? Surely this gag relies entirely on the finger puppet and the ref could leave the cards in his/her pocket and still get a response of equal hilarity.

Players that share running styles

It may sound an odd comparison but whenever I see Michael Olise play for Crystal Palace these days (and by golly he is looking every inch the Premiership star) the way he carries the ball always reminds me of how Paul Gascoigne used to run with the ball at his feet and seem to glide. Not a football ...

Finger wagging at referees

Am I in a minority of one or does anyone else find it maddening when elite players wag their fingers at referees to dispute a decision? Dunno what it is about it but it displays a kind of condescension and arrogance which makes my blood boil.

As someone unable to attend matches, genuine thanks to CountyRoyal for a really heartfelt and interesting report from a clearly deeply frustrated fan. But, blimey, while I believe him/her I didn't realise we are that atrocious.

Re: The footballer gets arrested thread

Likewise, completely mystified why the police don't pursue the matter. Personally, I don't think Zouma will get away with it professionally. The UK is apparently a nation of animal lovers, some of them West Ham fans who will find his appalling, sadistic behaviour beyond the pale.

Re: The generic transfer thread

I really hope Deli Ali resurrects his career. I think he has a pretty good excuse for the lengthy hiatus in his form as it coincided with working under Mourhino which is enough to wreck anyone's career these days. I feel very sorry for Jesse Lingard. Such a good player and should be getting regular ...
