Seriously I've just given myself the proper giggles reading through this thread. I thought I was sensitive.

I haven't used the word tosspot since I was 17.

Err, bonkers is getting tossed around a bit unneccessarily here. You told me it was a compliment.

So what happens to these stats if someone dives for a pen?

Oh, and Snowball, thank you. I was being genuine about the type font. You seem to have moderated it, and I am very grateful.

There's Balotelli bonkers (good)

And there's Suarez bonkers (bad)

You're one, he is the other...

Snowball
Royal With Cheese We're now crediting people with assists when they're fouled?

How does that work?

No we are not. I am crediting them with winning free-kicks which are scored.

That's fine. Good to know we are not mad as a box of frogs then.

Just as an aside, what do you award if a free kick is won but no goal is scored?

I may be over-simplifying this but I just can't understand how a player who, for example, has his legs taken away from him while running in the vague direction of the goal within a certain distance from the goal can warrant an assist. You could only give this if he wasn't actually fouled but deliberately went down with little or no contact - in other words cheating.

If Roberts squares a ball to Harte who shoots from 20 yards and scores
we give him the assist.

If Roberts is fouled just outside the box and Harte scores from the
resultant FK, I see fit to award a Major Contribution.

As for cheating or not I couldn't give a toss.

Lasts season Shane Long scored a lot of goals, won a lot of pens
and plenty of free-kicks just outside the box.

They all count.

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree on that. Too subjective for my liking.
I'm sure you'll not lose any sleep over it!

Thank you. And that's really the point, isn't it? it's my attempt to build stats that more
represent players' contributions. It doesn't matter to me that "other people" or the FA,
or other sites do X or Y or Z.

I believe I've explained and justified my decisions. I am totally happy with them,
and it doesn't matter to me at all if some, many or all people agree or disagree.

As I have said so many times. These are my stats.

For about three months I've been pilloried for my "RIDICULOUS" idea of ignoring Games 1-6
in order to more truly represent the quality of the team. I must have "fielded" a few hundred
"idiot" jibes.

Yet eventually McDermott, the club, the match programme, all went with what I was saying,
and yet again, I have been proved right.

Last year I was ridiculed for saying we'd make the POs. I said we would this year, too.

Maybe I should have gone along with the baying masses and NOT done those stats, eh?

Back in our 106 point season there used to be regular quotes on here referring to the Actim Index when we had 7 in the top 10 etc etc.
There was a certain amount of discussion about how the index was calculated and a general explanation was given. My recollection is that, although imperfect, everybody accepted that it was consistent and just accepted them as they were.

I see no difference between that and the current situation. Snowball has defined his criteria so it is a fair comparison for each player. That is how it is so for god's sake stop this bloody stupid bickering.

Snowers, to be honest I don't know why you bother to post them in an open, public forum. You'd be better off blogging.

It's probably something I would pay more attention to in that format.

Forums are for open debate and, with the best will in the world, I don't think it's unfair to say you could be a little softer on your critics. You appear to attach some sort of sentiment to your postings not unlike the attachment I have to my children!

Anyway - I'm turning in for the evening.

No doubt the debate will run....

Thanks, JC.

That's really my point. Every day the complaints just come again and again,
always the same junk, always pointless, spoiling the thread(s) for those who
might actually LIKE the stats.

Evening all

As you'll notice I've not posted on here for a long long time but I do read Hob Nob everyday. As for my credentials as a fan - I have been a loyal Royal for over nearly 40 years.

I'll nail my colours to the mast straight away and state that I've always been a fan of Snowball's contributions. I find his stats very informative and illuminating.

What disturbs me however is the level and nature of criticism levelled at Snowball for his posts. It's really reached a ridiculous level of vitriol and personal attack that I find distasteful. I find this similar to the attacks against any poster who happens to raise questions that challenge what appears to be the 'accepted position' of a number of Hob Nob regulars. It doesn't surprise me that Snowball has become so defensive in his replies which I feel is borne out of the continuous sniping and often offensive comments he receives. It is tantamount to bullying in my view and is characteristic of the culture that appears to exist on this board. So many times I have seen posters attacked and insulted because they dare to post an opinion which challenges the received wisdom of others. I refer to, for example, the attacks on those who supported Shane Long, Jimmy Kebe, Brendan Rodgers etc. etc. when the apparent majority held differing views. We are all entitled to our opinions and should be respected for them not vilified and subjected to personal and abusive attacks. Can I please plead for a bit of maturity, sanity and grown up debate rather than this incessant and unpleasant exchange of abuse? Can't we please stop all of this now, take a step back and perhaps start again? I miss the good hearted humour and banter that used to characterise this board.

I just wanted to state my position and offer support to Snowball. He's not perfect, he has his faults like all of us but he is a Reading fan through and through - the one thing that unites us all.

Thanks for listening - please continue to post your stats Snowball, I for one think they are excellent. Just wanted to say my piece.

I think it's the ridiculous level of ego that goes along with the posts which make you an easy target.

Don't respond to questions.

And Yes, a blog would work better than posting on a forum, it would also be more pleasing on the eye.

Last abusive post from me has already been written.
