It's clubs we haven't played in the cups.

We lost to Blackburn in 1913 (but they were so impressed they stole our goalie or something). And we got into Europe that summer

Can't see we've played Wimbledon, AFCW or MKD in any cup.

I can't recall anything about any Reading Carlisle game though I must have seen a couple.

We have never played Carlisle in a cup.
We have played them 10 times in the League, all in the old Div 3
They have played at every level with one brief appearance in the old Div 1 in 1974-75

Carlisle topped Division One after winning their first three games in1974-75, but ended up bottom of the table.

Tis true, they were and that was even way before their prolific goal scoring machine, goalkeeper, Jimmy Glass.

For a Swindon loanee (I think) his injury winner, whenever it was, against somebody, to keep them in the league, has to be one of *those* moments!....... well for them anyway! :D

Imagine how the Carlisle fans felt: I went mad enough when Feds scored in a relatively meaningless game against Cardiff

I moved from Reading to Cumbria in 1982 and Carlisle became my sort of second club so I've been there a few times.

As well as the Jimmy Glass thing they had a chairman who famously told the local reporter (allegedly in confidence) he had seen a UFO! Needless to say was on the front page of the News and Star the next day! This was Michael Knighton, who famously tried to buy Manchester united but couldn't afford it.

One of the members of their 74 team was on radio 5 the other day and said one of the reasons the team got relegated was that every single player in the first team was on exactly the same way each regardless of talent. There was resentment and they lost their way. They did win the first three games of the season and were top briefly.

Ironically the first game of the season was a two nil win at Chelsea.....watch for a cracking second goal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fevLVc-hiI&sns=em

Fox Talbot - They're a current football league club
- They joined the League before WWII -just like us
- They've played in all 4 divisions in the last 50 years - just like us
YET
- We've never played them in any cup
- We haven't played them in the league for over 30 years

??

The Prisoner When were Rochdale in the top flight?!

Carlisle United?

Yep.

Blackpool meet all the conditions except the last one.

Of the current league clubs the ones we have have never drawn in either major cup are:

Exeter (amazingly for a southern club), Rochdale, Scunthorpe, Hartlepool, Crewe, Accrington S (old and new), Carlisle, (old style northern clubs) Blackpool and various new bods - MK Dons, Fleetwood, Morecambe and Wigan.

At the other end of the spectrum, we have played Wigan in 6 different divisions, although when you consolidate for the change in names, it means we have played them in all four tiers of Englisg Football.

Strangely we have never played them in a cup competition, although there was the famous Play-off semi final.

Not sure I follow this. We have played Blackburn in the past 30 years, and in the cup, and they haven't played in all 4 divisions so it's not them on on 3 out of 5 counts. Apologies if I've mis-understood your point.

Just a quick guess...Oldham?

Can't remember us playing them in my time watching, but likely wrong.

We were playing a league match at Oldham when Jimmy Glass scored that goal for Carlisle. Remember hearing about it on the radio in the Boundary Park car park.

Stop, stop, please.

The 4th post got the answer right - possibly because he virtually lives in Carlisle - and the 8th post acknowledged it.

Correct. That was Reading 5-0 Oldham during the petrol "crisis". We played them quite a few times in the old Div 2/new league 1 days

I will always remeber that game for John McGinlay showing me his pants before the game.
