Franchise FC Sadly, for both of us, it's an age thing.

Anyone that's old enough to have been there, probably can't remember yesterday, let alone 1985

Newbies.

I think us really old puns’ favourite ever team was the 75-76 team. Friday, Death, Minty Murray, Hetzke, Peters, Youlden, Hiron, Henderson, Stuckey, Nelson, Dunphy, to name eleven of them. Finished third in Division 4.

Agreed SCR?

106 team next favourite.

Any team with Death and Friday would definitely be up amongst the favourites.

grey_squirrel The Wolves game recollections

Unsurprisingly I think we all turned up expecting a win. Wolves we’re in turmoil. Had overseas owners (the Bhattis) who they despised and wanted shot of. They were allocated the E stand only (the town end was mostly us) and displayed a ‘BHATTIS OUT’ protest banner throughout the game.

I think this was back in the days of Mike Lewis’ “creative accounting”. 13,000 in the ground yet the whole of Reading was deserted that evening.

We had more than our slice of luck during the run and Lady Luck was always going to desert us at some stage and this was the night. I remember the disappointed vividly but runs do always end unpredictability.

I fortunately swerved Walsall away thereafter but foolishly ventured to Gigg Lane (Bury) the next away game. We lost 3-1 It was dank, dreary and miserable and that just wasn’t our performance. The players obviously thought we’d done enough.

I remember Trevor Senior trying to be too clever and cocking up a simple chance at 2-1. I think Wolves equalised about 5 minutes later.

I was at the Plymouth game but unusually in the Tilehurst End for some reason. I don’t remember it too well other than they should have gone 4-0 up but I remember Elm Park erupting when we scored the 3rd and 4th goals.

Best memories are winning the penalty shoot out against Coventry in the Simod Cup semifinal, plus playoff semifinal against Wigan. John Alexander scoring 4 goals against Grimsby is one that has stayed with me, plus Mark White’s own goal against Hartlepool. I remember all 20 or so of them going crazy in the Town End.

The Simod win v Coventry was a special night.

Barney Following the Plymouth game, we then went to Bournemouth on Boxing day (and won) then away to Bristol Rovers two days later (and won).
So the top the table at the end of the year was...

Reading 62 points
Derby 43 points
Plymouth 41 points
Blackpool 40 points

Strangely though, after beating the Gas on the 28th Dec we didn't win another league game till 22nd Feb !!

Yep we really fell away. I know Royal Blue was also at Fellowes Park massacre at the start of Feb 86. It was biting cold. We got absolutely pasted and lost 6-0. Not a great away day.

Didn’t go to the Plymouth game but I remember watching the Grandstand vidi printer in disbelief showing we had gone 4-3 up. The last score I had known was that we were 3 down.
….and just my bloddy luck, wasn’t at the Argyle game (as I wasn’t for many of that season), came home on leave from ‘killing paddies’ went to Walsall  it was sub-cold, it was 0-6, my half-time pasty was frozen in the middle and it was Walsall……had better times

What exactly is ‘killing paddies’, would you like to elaborate on that?

Can remember that team but preferred 1978-79 that's when I started going regularly

That was my first season we won the league I thought it was like this all the time until grandad told me it was our first title for 50 years

no, not really, it’s just a ‘term of endearment’ that a highly educated poster on AE likes to sometimes use.

You must be bored, what with this lack of football?……. trawling back over last years posts…..

Me bored and trawling? Coming from a poster trawling over something from 36 years ago?

Actually, I’m still pissed off that I had to babysit that day and miss the game, the only home game that I missed that season.
