MATCHWATCH : Leyton Orient (a)

by Sutekh » 21 Jan 2025 14:14

When : Saturday January 25 2025, 3pm
Where : Brisbane Road, Leyton, London, E10 5NF
Capacity : 9,271

A return to a scene of one of the best forgotten away trips last season is next.

Orient are doing rather better than the bottom of the table “failures” that encountered AFC Charity at the SCL back in September to collect their first league points at the 5th time of asking. They are now doing rather better and have climbed to 8th, 1 place and 3 points behind Reading with a much superior goal difference so this game is probably another of the “take a point if it was offered now” collection, certainly it’s another game the club will be lucky to get anything from as Orient are challenging strongly for the “form team of the division” accolade, being as they are currently on a run of 7 wins and 2 draws from their last 9 league games.

Included in that run are good away wins at Wigan (2-0) and Barnsley (4-0) so a visit from Reading I don’t think is exactly going to worry them - which might be Reading’s best hope of sneaking something.

Charlie Kelman is leading scorer for the O’s with 7 but star man is possibly midfielder Ethan Galbraith who gets involved with a lot that is good. Goals for Orient have been spread around the team and there’s been a good few coming from defenders which would suggest that giving away set pieces is not something Reading should have high on their list of match priorities.

Seems many players are suddenly back from injury, think Mbengue, Yiadom and Elliott are the only senior casualties, though the youngsters Clark and Ryan are both pretty much done for the season. Whether there’s been any reaction to those who returned v Stockport is as yet unknown so fingers crossed that which is known now doesn’t deteriorate by Saturday. Hoping that Charlie Wellens will get a place on the bench as it would be interesting to see him get a debut with his dad managing from the opposite dugout.

Nothing known

Historically

There have been 33 league games played at Brisbane Road between the clubs since they met there for the first time in December 1926 (lost 5-1). Reading have won 7 of the 33 games and lost 16 so a Leyton Orient win would seem to be roughly twice as likely as a Reading win.

Last season’s visit was a bit of a mess afterwards with Selles leading the players over to less than receptive away support for some reason. Not a good idea after Orient had got a very late winner and the team, at the time, on a dreadful away run of 19 games with no win.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and travel
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Not much hope for this im afraid. Tough game though hopefully those players being back will help things

Not mad on Abrefa on the wing. Would rather him RB and suppose Dorsett LB though he was dreadful on Saturday

Would start Kelv E if possible at LW, Campbell RW. Dean and Bindon did ok Saturday so fine to continue

Final thing - in our position I’m not sure calling us AFC charity is exactly fair. I doubt we’ve any particularly outstanding record of losing to sides at the bottom either tbh

I thought the entire back 4 plus subs were fcuking terrible saturday. With the midfield not far behind in awfulness.

That's about as strong as it gets, given the injuries?

Is Abrefa injured again? Surely he gets on the bench if available?

Seems to have inexplicably fallen behind Rushesha at RB and obviously isn’t needed at RW with Campbell, Camara, Wareham and Ehibhatiomhan back.

Suprised Garcia has maintained his LW role with those threeon the bench.

I think Garcia looks tidy and assured but I'd be hard pressed to name a moment he's changed a game, other than being mistaken for Big Kelv.

Vickers, for contrast, created chances and forced mistakes from the off.

Dorsett seems to be another McIntyre, just constantly breaking down.

We've got to stop hoofing clear aimlessly. Don't piss about, but know where your outball is and hit it accurately.

Still slightly porous in midfield.

Dean's lack of pace being exposed by midfield missing challenges and getting played round.

Including Knibbs trying to get an assist against us by playing him out of the game with a poor pass.

Certainly seems to be the new sicknote. Wonder how many weeks this one will be.

Much as I like him, I don't think Campbell has ever pushed it past someone and given them something to chase.

Played against Valencia, didn't look anywhere near his old best.

Still seems bizarre for him to be behind Kanu and Rushesha.

Similarly, would rather have Garcia at left back than Kanu - would also allow us to use a more dangerous player on the left wing.

Sutekh Smith using his back to foul their keeper.

Never ever getting a penalty for that. Smith did back in slightly, probably naturally to hold his position, but there's not a ref in the world who isn’t protecting the keeper there.
