US Political situation - Any impact on Reading FC?

by Forbury Lion » 20 Jan 2026 09:38

We have American owners, in fact Rob Coughig is listed on the internet as being a Republican (doesn't necessarily makes him pro-Trump).

Just wondering if this Greenland takeover/invasion/purchase talk and the tariff war and unconfirmed suggestion that Europe may sell their bonds and crash the Dollar sending the US into a recession might have some impact on the club...maybe bad, maybe good. Maybe Trump will block investment in the UK meaning we'll be in a similar situation to when the former owner couldn't get money out of China to pay the wages and Blackburn Rovers where the Venkys couldn't get money out of India.

Worth thinking about.

Apparently, the plan is to fix the end of season vote so that Trump gets both Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season awards...

Oh and every golden gamble and Papa john's Pizza from now til the end of the season...

but even then, he will likely throw RC, TT and Reading FC under a bus...

If only we were still owned by the Dodgy Russian, we'd be fine now...

Rob Couhig hasn't got a pot to piss in so I doubt it will make any difference whatsoever.

In terms of getting money out of the United States: capital controls would completely collapse every major economy, so aren't going to happen.

From what I can think of: the only potential impacts could be changes to exchange rates and/or the money our investors have available to them. I doubt it will make a serious impact on the club at this stage though.

If our government is consistent (hard to imagine, I know) and Trump does invade Greenland then it will sanction the US as it did to Russia.. Then all American owners of British Football clubs will have to sell up. Can't see sanctions happening though.
