attacking McDermott is just ridiculous and Adie Willams reading out stupid tweets like: name one thing that has improved since McDermott became manager. This is all just so stupid. What do you all expect? Shall we just sack him tomorrow? Then shall we start moaning when the next manager wins only 3 out of his first 12 games. Shall we then sack him as well? This type of mindset will send us down the football league. Not up it.

agreed.

been here 3 months, hes taken over a team that has gone through the Anton catastrophe, had to sell half the team to recoup the wages he spaffed on shite, sacked adkins, brought in Clarke, who attempted to rebuild the entire squad in a single summer, then left halfway through the season when he realised hed built a completely imbalanaced squad, full of mentally weak loanees who we probably have to play or else be left with a massive wage bill, then he has his two best strikers sold and replaced with substandard cheaper alternatives. and people have the nerve to spout off with a sense of entitlement that they cant believe he hasn't sorted all of that out already....
just lol.

Hes sorted us out mentally, we don't fold any more, we get late winners, our defence is more resolute, we are still playing nice football on occasion, there is a relationship building between team and players, the only real issue now, as it has been all year, or even longer, is that we have no proper strikers and therefore struggle to score goals.

We will be building a team around youth players stepping up and lower league hungry types next season. Financially we have to. I believe there is no one better than brian for that job. I just hope that he makes it to the summer to be allowed to do so, without unreasonable nonsense from fans and local media.

Does this include the 1-0 defeat at lowly MK Dons the 2-2 home draw with lowly Fulham and the 3-1 away defeat at lowly Huddersfield and the 2-0 home defeat by Palace etc?

Sutekh
Forbury Lion Fans have a right to criticise players and commentators.

A good commentator gives a commentary of what is happening based on their observations so that those listening can form their own opinions, They do not force their opinions on those listening.

An interesting commentator will give an opinion. Tim can be over the top but given the regularity of Vydra missing gilt edged opportunities it's not surprising it's reached silly proportions.

Hoping there'll be a Vydra hat-trick coming our way shortly to shut Mr Dellor up...

of course its right vydra gets some criticism if he continues to miss chances and look mentally shot. have no problem with that.
its just over the top, too much opinion on vydra and negative hyperbole. He gleefully remarks on every bad thing he does, like he's waiting for it. at the same time he may mention anything good vydra does, but only in the most begrudging and brief manner.
He just needs to add a little balance, shift his focus away from individual players, and try to be positive every now and then.
Watching reading has been bloody awful since brian left.i get that its frustrating and annoying and depressing, we all feel that, and I understand that dellor feels it too. but the reality is, no one wants to listen to frustration, annoyance and depression for two hours every week.

Maybe Dellor should ask McDermott about the tactics, 4-1-4-1 with Vydra as a lone striker perhaps not working so why not play 4-3-3 or 4-4-2 with Vydra supporting a striker?

No Fixed Abode Yes - but most fans said it was good to get rid. Now it's an excuse....

theres a massive difference between,' I think we should get rid- because both players want to go and don't want to be here, and blackmans contract is up, Im fully behind that decision', and, 'sell em both theyre shit.'
and because of that its absolutely possible to believe we were right to sell in those circumstances, while also believing that selling those two players will have cost us points.

Considering the situation that McDermott has to work with, are you expecting that we win every single game? Nit-picking the defeats of a struggling, underperforming side so that you can have a little poke at McDermott because he hasn't made us a great footballing power inside 3 months. This is just pathetic.

What's happened to supporters. Is everyone a customer now? Just expecting great entertaining, winning football every week otherwise you just moan. 95% of the time, football has always been sh*te at Reading and most other clubs.

apologies, I meant he has 'improved' us mentally rather than completed a total and successful mental rebuild of the entire squad.
im happy though that we are now getting draws in games we would previously have lost, and winning games we would previously have drawn, or lost.
its not all the time, obviously, but its an improvement.

And Vydra was outstanding in that game against Bolton. He made a huge difference to help us win the game. He won a penalty, got the Bolton player sent off. He created the conditions so that we could play 10 men for 70 minutes of that game. He stretched Bolton, ran at them, made clever runs that lead to him having a number of great chances. Finally after the team hitting the post and missing numerous chances Ola John found us the winner. The performance was fantastic. Bl**dy Dellor putting a downer on everything even when we win away from home!

If Vydra managed to score just one of his chances against Bolton and if the winning goal came a little earlier instead of us all sweating on it until the final kick then the post match reaction would have been a lot more positive(although probably not from Dellor). Football is fine margins. That's why it is so difficult to bet on the outcome of football matches. Dellor massively over reacted early in the season when we were flying high when alot of the wiser Reading fans were not getting carried away and he is now massively over reacting again when things are not looking so rosy. Again the wiser Reading fans will not panic as we know that Brian is building a long-term project and he needs support not misery and negativity.

OLLIE KEARNS
Hoop Blah Firstly, there's no doubt that Vdyra has, overall, been a flop and a disappointment. On the whole, IMO, he's played pretty well and consistently but he just hasn't scored the goals that a player of his ability should have done and ultimately that's why we paid what we did for him.

However, Dellor's coverage of Vdyra is embarrassing for a professional sports journalist and sums up exactly what is now wrong with BBCRB's reporting of all things Reading FC. As the lead journalist and commentator Dellor should be relatively impartial and factual, obviously with some understandable bias towards the club because the audience is 99% Reading fans, but he gets far too close and far too personal which means it becomes all about his opinions as opposed to those of Mick and Ady who are paid to be the experts.

The way Dellor jumps on Vydra's short comings but not those of others, or how he gives some players (or managers) an easy ride isn't conducive to good broadcasting.

Basically, as others have said, Dellor has turned into the worst of our over-indulged new fans with heightened expectations and a distinct lack of patience. He's the ultimate team-boarder.

Fully agree with this. His comment about Vydra being disrespectful to Reading fans for missing a penalty was about the most ridiculous think I’ve heard him say. I wonder if, as a professional journalist covering Reading F.C, that he considers himself as being disrespectful to Reading fans when he can’t even explain the basics of things like FFP to the fans who call in saying we should be paying £10m for a new striker.
I don’t mind the passion he has as a fan coming through in his commentary but the whole show needs revamping. Rita adds nothing with her texts and tweets and Dellor should be taking a back seat at the end of the match. Let Mick Gooding have 20 minutes to give us a tactical view of the game from an ex managers perspective or something along those lines. You can almost sense Mick Gooding’s embarrassment sometimes when Dellor and Ade “hold on a mintute” Williams go off on one !
As for Vydra, of course he’s had a poor season but it isn’t from a lack of effort. He thrived in the past playing in and around the likes of Deeney and Forristieri, quality we which are sadly lacking at present. As a result he snatches at the rare chances that come along rather than showing his proven finishing ability as he’s done in the past.

Both excellent posts.

(As in, I wholeheartedly agree with everything said.)

Not sure where in the stadium you were watching the game from but to say that Vydra was outstanding is completely laughable, you are of course entitled to your opinion, but IMO he was bloody awful. I do not believe in destroying individual players for their performance, just as i don't believe in heaping praise on those that play well, as more often than not you can point to any number of players that contribute to a win or a loss.

Dellor is paid to create controversy, and apart from the bloke being a complete bellend he actually does it quite well. His frustration with Vydra goes back to his rant at the start of the season when he moaned about the £2.5 million loan fee for a player that would probably only be with us for the one season, when the fee could have been spent on a decent goalscorer in a permanent deal.

As much as I don't like Dellor's obsession with slating Vydra, i am finding it really difficult to disagree with him on this one!

Sorry, I picked up on the previoys comment of Vydra as a lone striker not working.

The sky app shows we played 4-3-1 with Kermorgant up front and Vydra playing behind, If that is the case I would have expected Quinn and Piazzon to be pinging in crosses and Vydra sending the ball down the middle to Kermorgant. Nobody is questioning why Kermogant failed to score.

Exactly. And the reason Vydra is getting most of the chances and not Kermorgant is because Vydra is so clever at getting into space and makes good runs. It will only be a matter of time before Vydra regains his confidence and starts scoring goals again. Unfortunately his time with us has almost run out and unless we're going to be signing him permanently (which I'd be very happy with) it will likely be for someone else.

I think he's a good player. And being a decent striker often isn't just about scoring goals.

I just wish he'd score some more goals.

Dellor is entitled to whatever view he holds on RFC - as others have said he doesn't have to toe the party line.

It's a tough to answer if Vydra has been a flop? On one hand you look at the goal return, which for a player of his quality is low. However, in terms of team ethic and work rate he is second to none, in fact I think if Blackman had these attributes he would a be Premier League player. You don't become a bad player overnight, sometimes it just doesn't fall for you.

Ultimately if he wasn't get in positions to score you would question his desire and commitment, but this simply isn't the case. I don't see anyone moaning about the free header Cox missed.

If anyone wants to question his desire look at the game against Bristol City (I think) where he ran 50 yards made a sliding tackle and we scored from it. However saying that - based on stats, I certainly wouldn't be clambering for Reading to make his move permanent.

No he's not. He works for BBC local radio, it's not Talksport. He should be there to commentate and get opinion from the experts and chip in with his own views here and there.

Dixeyroyal His frustration with Vydra goes back to his rant at the start of the season when he moaned about the £2.5 million loan fee for a player that would probably only be with us for the one season, when the fee could have been spent on a decent goalscorer in a permanent deal.

This is part of the problem, he laid his stool out earlier in the season and was far too outspoken about Vydra. I don't mind a bit of objective criticism and critique but he was calling him useless and all sorts when he's clearly a good player who's just had a shit season in front of goal? He obviously doesn't like to be challenged on his opinion and has a bit of a bee in his bonnet about Vydra for some reason.

Gordons Cumming As I feel a bit lazy today I'm just going to copy and paste this:-

Reading's 1-0 win at Bolton meant the Royals are mathematically assured of their place in the Championship next season.

BBC Radio Berkshire reporter Tim Dellor asked boss Brian McDermott about the poor form of striker Matej Vydra following the game, after the on-loan Watford man missed a penalty in the match.

The Czech is goalless in the Championship since 28 November but it's fair to say Dellor and McDermott see his contribution a little differently to one another.

Here's the transcript of their exchange on the subject:

Tim Dellor: "It's an interesting spin because any way you look at it Vydra has not scored for you in the Championship yet. If you look at the number of points that are won by Reading when he is on the pitch it is incredible the disparity between when he is on the pitch and off the pitch. I think quite a lot of people, including myself, are surprised you keep picking him each week."

Brian McDermott: "Well there you go. Life is full of surprises, Tim."

TD: "It is. Are you not concerned about his complete lack of form in front of goal? I mean his misses today were unbelievable."

BM: "I think you're being really quite harsh on him."

TD: "I have no doubt I'm being harsh on him but..."

BM: "No, I actually think he is working his socks off for the team and I am asking him to work his socks off. He has had opportunities and he has not scored today but there's no way in a million years I'm going to make comments about Matej Vydra that are detrimental to him. He's a great lad, he works his socks off, I see him every day in training so... I am never going to single anybody out like that because it's just wrong in my opinion."

TD: "For you because you are the coach..."

BM: "No, it's just totally wrong."

TD: "Not wrong from me though because I'm just trying..."

BM: "No Tim, you can ask whatever question you like and I have to answer it. You are entitled to ask whatever question you like but I have got so much respect for Matej Vydra."

Excellent management from McDermott there. Good to see Tim put in his place for pushing his personal agenda.

Vydra's scoring record is poor. His confidence in front of goal is clearly shot to buggery. But he works his arse off, clearly has bags of talent and doesn't run and hide. When you compare him with his competitors, like Kermie, Cox and Rakels, his scoring record is far from significantly worse. McDermott's clearly betting that he comes good, because the potential reward there is far superior to dropping him for Rakels to fall over or Cox to get no chances.

None of Kermorgant, Rakels or Cox offer as much outside of goals as Vydra does. There's an argument that a partnership of two of them might work better, but it's far from a certainty. If you're going to criticise someone and pushing for them to be dropped, have a clearly superior option to push as an alternative.

I have no problem with McDermott deciding to write off Vydra for Cox or Rakels. But as long as he plays him, we should be reasonably supportive, and most importantly - particularly for the paid professional Dellor, objective.
