Copps keeps saying unless it's a letter or a fax it isn't an offer

So he can get a phone call saying, "Would you let Harps go for 3.5 mill?"

He could answer, "Sure" and it still isn't a formal offer or a formal acceptance.

It's a fine line between being factually correct and pedantic about the semantics of a bid and pulling the wool over the fans eyes.

I'm that bothered about whether or not we've received bids/enquiries for our players or not but I don't like the way we often get this half truths and white lies coming out of the club.

I'd rather they just said we're not going to discuss specifics of transfer dealings full stop.

we all know what he means FFS

no official bids made, as in, no written formal approaches

but as ever-if we receive a bid which we consider good enough, we put it to the player to consider
if they want it, it will move to the formal stage
if they dont, it wont

'taint rocket science
and anyone who feels wool has been pulled has been a bit slow.

How can Harper have left in January then?

You say we only put it to the player if a formal bid is made but Coppell tells us that no bids were made. That doesn't add up. One of his statements is misleading at best.

Personally I don't take anything coming out of the club as literal and I read between the lines. Plenty of fans don't and believe everything they come out. Those people are having the wool pulled over their eyes.

that clearly isnt what i just said though.

how the feck is misleading?? you and i seem to have seen through the "deceit" ok

what i did just say was that :-
phone offer made=good enough for club=offered to player=accepted=then a formal bid is placed=and accepted by club

other wise its:- phone offer made=not high enough=ends there
or
phone offer made=high enough=offered to player=rejected=ends there

st to back that up

here is what i said......

its only a post or so above

as ever-if we receive a bid which we consider good enough, we put it to the player to consider
if they want it, it will move to the formal stage
if they dont, it wont

thats clearly consistent with what has been said about our policy

It's still misleading to say no bids were received when we've made a player aware of an enquiry/informal bid.

I know it's not been formalised, and that Coppell chose his words carefully to say no bid was made for any player, but if it's been put to the player as an exceptable enquiry then most in the real world would loosely call that a bid.

Thats where I think its misleading to those in fans in the wider world. It's not factually incorrect though.

if they dont get it, then thats because they are daft.

Harps could have said to the boss, "I really want to stay here, boss, no matter what..."

and Copps says, "OK, but if anyone makes an offer, I have to tell you, for my own peace of mind."

BORO ask is Harps available for 4M?

Copps tells Harps who repeats that he wants to stay.

Copps says no to BORO before it's a formal offer.

Yes that bit's pretty clear and understood.

My point is that the misleading bit is that saying no bid has been made. It is factually correct that no 'formal written bid' has been submitted, but most people would consider the above as a bid.

I would like to think that most people would be able to tell the difference between an informal enquiry and an official bid, and I'm not usually one for giving 'people' the benefit of the doubt.

Anyway, ever-present player in the best Reading team we'll ever see so in my book Harps falls into the 'good' column. (If that's what was ever being discussed around here...)

So Harper pledged his loyalty to the club by not leaving in January. That's all well and good, but is it a reason never to drop the bloke if his form drops? This isn't a knee jerk reaction, he's been very poor for the last 5 or 6 games. The same goes for SHunt.

Copps just doesn't strike me as a liar. I believe him. I believe there's a difference between a formal bid, an informal bid, a what-if enquiry and so on.

Just a made up example here (and I'm not saying we would have won the Premiership with Marek playing) but say Harps said, "I want to play at Reading" (last summer) and Copps told Southgate...

Copps could get a phone call that says, "Hi Steve, I really need a midfielder with wavy arms..."

Copps syas, just to be polite, "What does really mean?" and he hears "£4 million."

Even if he tells Harps, casually, "Boro are sniffing round and have talked 4 mill" I don't think that's an offer.

If Boro wanted to make an offer and TEST Reading/Harps they could press the button on their fax machine and copy it to the press/agents.

I don't particularly like the way 3 players in particular are hounded by @rseholes who probably can't kick a ball, but the recent ACTIM Index shows

LATEST ACTIM INDEX

Top Championship Defender Liam Rosenior

Top Championship Midfielder Stephen Hunt

Top Championship Striker Ebanks-Blake (624 points) Doyle (622 points)

Overall

02 Doyle
03 S Hunt
13 Rosenior
35 Noel Hunt
36 Chris Armstrong
62 Marcus Hanneman
66 Jimmy Kebe
82 Ivan Ingimarsson

Harper, Cisse, not in top 100

8 (5 in top 30) Burnley
8 (5 in top 32) Wolves
8 (5 in top 36) Reading

5 Birmingham

3 Cardiff
