I just saw that as well. As I was out last night and missed it on telly, what was the perception of how we played? Bearing in mind there is a world of difference between a long aimed pass to feet/into space and you common or garden hoooooofffff.

Royal Rother So people are saying they would rather go up, and struggle in the PL with a bunch if mercenaries who aren't good enough, than stay down and build with our own youngsters.

That surprises me but fair enough. Short-termism and quick-hit glory hunting is alive and well at RFC I guess.

Well it's very pious of you but that's not really what people are saying. Personally I want them to be good enough not to be put in the team merely because they were in the Academy.

As for Glory hunting, why would you support Reading if you were glory hunter?

If it's not what they are actually saying it's because they didn't answer the question that was asked in the first place.

Vision Speaking as one who's more than happy to see an Academy heavy side play Championship football I'd still take promotion every time. Are we really so spoilt that we can take it for granted and pick and choose the perfect moment? Football doesn't work like that.

It's an odd notion to me to suggest that we can't develop youngsters on the back of promotion success. It just takes the will to do it and a set up that isn't terrified of Premiership relegation. There's nothing wrong with the Championship btw it's just we want to play as high as possible surely.

Of course. Like I said the two scenarios I picked were obviously exaggerated for effect. We could go up and do a Hull and then build from there. Or we could stay down, struggle, and find the academy lads aren't really all that. But either way it would be nice to think that whichever division we find ourselves next season we continue to take a long term approach. There's no point in having a successful academy if you don't bring them through, and despite what Mags says I do think it is that much harder for a manager to take a punt on an academy player in the Prem, especially if he's fighting for his job in a relegation scrap.

That's what i mean about having a proper long term plan though and not bricking it because you might just get relegated from the Moneyship. It shouldn't matter whether you're in the Premiership or not as to whether you continue to impliment that long term goal. If the long term goal is to sustain Top level football on our terms then experiencing top level football as much as possible should help rather than hinder.

T W A T said Michael Sweeting ‏@M_Sweeting 13h

Submitted a match report to @thisisanfield. I'm scathing of Reading's approach. I don't like two banks of four & hoof it long at U18 level.

Not sure what game he was watching I thought they were good at playing it from the back. Nice and composed.

We were and we even looked to play out from the back a little too much on a few occasions. It's just the typical reaction of Liverpool fans. Like I said, always the victims.

Thinking about it we must have a bad academy given that Liverpool have shown interest in two of our academy graduates in the past two years and their current first team manager played a part in setting it up.

Watching it again they really believe our player kicked or stamped on their player deliberately!

There's a pretty decent match report on the Daily Mail website of all places.

A rather bitter blinkered review. I like how getting annoyed at the referees inconsistency on policing time wasting is seen as the unsavoury behaviour

Thought it was blatant play acting from Canos holding his head when McLennen was only trying to get up. Perhaps Mr Sweeting should be criticising his own clubs coaches for teaching their players to play act and time waste.

Exactly, the was no unnatural or change of direction with his foot movement.

It was good to hear their coach praise us afterwards. I'm sure he will be sacked today so he really knows what it's like to be a victim.

Right, so the Academy should be ashamed because they're training RFC youngsters only to be good enough to beat Liverpool youngsters, and that's limiting their potential...?

Assuming the Daily Mail report was from an impartial reporter, it suggests our win was well deserved, Liverpool's comeback was improbable, and Reading dominated for most of the game. Puts the Liverpool sour grapes into perspective.

Well, the Liverpool fans are claiming we play hoofball?

Ok, it's only the goals but not much hoofball in evidence here

There is also the irony of a club that produced Steven "40 yard diagonal" Gerrard criticising other clubs for 'hoofing'.
