melonhead whereas if he doesnt sign, said club gets him for free, so its a low cost punt.

Except they would have to pay a much much larger signing on fee and they are still having to give him a contract (probably at a higher wage than they would have done if paying a fee for him). Why do you think players choose to run contracts down?

So not that low cost.

Transfer fee>>>>>>>>>>>signing on fee
especially for a player of his "calibre", plus hes desperate to go back to france- and they know it

I think we are all a bit fed up with him. The last time he played well for us was Leicester at home last season. He has been nothing special since. I would sell in January but suspect he will not agree to go - as he is obviously set on having a free transfer at the end of the season.

If so I would be tempted to tell him to sign a new contract or let him rot in the reserves. That won't help him get another club.

I don't have a problem with him running his contract down. His duty is to the contract he's signed, not to sign a new one so the club can make a load of money. I don't think we'd get that much for him anyway and having a player of his quality (at times) would better in the run in. If he helped us get promotion, it'd be worth the money and more than we would've got in January. Maybe start bringing Obita in later in the season too.

Sir James of Kebe, go with my blessing.

Makes somewhat of a mockery of this article then.

Reading manager Brian McDermott is convinced Jimmy Kebe will sign a new deal with the Championship club.

The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the finest wide players outside the Premier League and the Royals are keen to secure his long-term future.

And after having an insightful discussion with his Mali international, McDermott revealed the player himself wants to remain at the club, despite his contract expiring next summer.

"I've spoken to Jimmy, he told me he loves Reading and wants to stay," he said.

Changed

"I know Jimmy well and I'm sure he would come to see me if that has changed."

Kebe had been sidelined for a month but made an encouraging return in the 2-2 draw against Derby in midweek.

Reading are currently 14th in the Championship after an indifferent start but former striker Shane Long is backing his team to rediscover their winning formula.

"I think if they get a run of games like they have been doing and get some wins under their belt like last season, then it could happen for them. It is promising times for Reading, I think."

The point is that we offered him a new contact and started negotiations in about March. Surely if he wanted to sign he would have done so by now if he loves it here so much.

Just not consistent enough for me so I'd try and sell him in January but most likely he'll go back to France in the summer for nothing.

And personally I think Obita has the makings to be a better player anyway, so no real loss overall.

Did I say different to that? All I said was "not that low".

You'd be surprised how big the signing on fees for free transfer are and how much higher wages they can get.....

Surely no surprise here?

No problem IMO, he seems to be playing a notch down on previously which shows me he's thinking its time to leave. He's still potentially devastating so unless we get a very good offer we'd be silly to offload in January unnecessarily.

We'll see where we are in Jan what the best decision is then, as will he, I'm sure. I wouldn't rule out him staying depending on what happens.

Unless we look like we could be pushing for promotion/play offs come Jan may as well sell him if we can get a half decent offer around the 2 million mark. Kanu and Jobi can do a job on the wings and Obitta showed promise in pre-season that he could be a decent enough replacement if he gets a chance. would rather he stayed though if we can get him to sign a new contract

If, in January, Hammond could get a club to pay money for a player whose contract runs out in six months then either he's a genius or the people who run that club are complete idiots.

I hope he stays, I will be disappointed if he joins an English club although if he went back to France I would understand why.
I just wish the club wouldn't wait so long to offer contracts to our better players.
