Tilehurst born and Tilehurst bred my dad’s family was from Whitley and my grandfather went to the 1928 FA cup semifinal against Cardiff and his dad was a supporter long before him.

My dad took me to my first game against Blyth Spartans in 1972. It was an FA cup replay and from memory it was a Wednesday afternoon and my dad took me out of school so I could go to the game. We won 6-1 and I was hooked. All my mates at Wilson Primary school supported either Arsenal, Leeds or Liverpool and I was proud to support Reading. They’re in my blood and always will be.

Over 50 years an ardent supporter, when we win I would go to bed and wake up a happy man, but when we lose the exact opposite, when i was young the effect was far better or worse but nowadays I`ve almost got use to losing, sad yes but the reality of being a fan of this club at the moment.
It`s in my blood.

Because so many of the most memorable highs and lows of my life; so many of the most vivid and passionate moments of my existence; events; and some of my best friendships have all directly come from being related to this football club.

That's whay it makes me so angry and so sad that financial mismanagment and the whims of people who don't appreciate or care about its history and traditions have completely changed the character of the football club and that these same people now hold its very future completely in their unknowing hands.

Hometown club but honestly - I couldn't give two shits. They'd be doing me a favour if they folded the club.

morganb Following on from the "Dai Yongee and Dayong Pang don't care" thread:

I'm just interested in why you personally care about Reading FC?

Do you defend them when your mates mock their latest defeat?

Do the poor results put you in a bad mood?

Have you stuck with them through thick and thin, in fair weather and foul?

Are you proud to support your local team and their record-breaking history?

Be it their results, the league they are in or even their survival as a club, why do you care about The Royals?

Why do you personally care about Reading FC?

Defend? No. If we're shit I laugh along.
Bad mood? Absolutely.
Stuck with? Reading till I die.
Proud to support local? Of course.
Why care? Born and bred here, pride of the town etc... But actually some of that gives way to just memories, solidarity, emotional attachment i.e. how people who have never even been to eg Liverpool can support them.

I attend matches with my old man, it's our family time. He used to go with his old man, too when he was a kid. I want the club to do well enough that if I ever have kids, I can bring them along.

Though to be honest, I'll still be turning up even if we end up in a lower division, not much else to do on a Saturday in Reading if you don't like shopping.

Still a big part of my life has been since 1978. I’m disabled and if it wasn’t for football I would not get out during the winter months. When we lose I am in a bad mood for the rest of the weekend just as well I live alone. It’s Always been something of a rollercoaster watching Reading play, I have some great memories and plenty of ups and downs along the way. But this season has been the worst I can ever remember, it’s truly heartbreaking to see this wonderful club disintegrate before my eyes.

I'm just interested in why you personally care about Reading FC?

Habit

Do you defend them when your mates mock their latest defeat?

No. I'm normally the one doing the mocking

Do the poor results put you in a bad mood?

Nope

Have you stuck with them through thick and thin, in fair weather and foul?

I stopped really caring when we were in the prem a decade ago, at the height of the club's success. I remember sitting there in the East Stand surrounded by gurning morons screaming obscenities at players just because they played for another team. It just seemed all so childish and pointless. One day, I found myself watching a fairly ordinary performance, thinking that I'd much rather be spending the cash for each game I went to on theatre tickets, so did from then on.

I can therefore therefore confirm that my allegiance to the club is not determined by its levels of success.

Are you proud to support your local team and their record-breaking history?

Yes, in the same way that I'm proud whenever a chum gets a good result at work. But it is by no means a point of personal pride. It is an entertainment product that I have enjoyed, and it's nice that the entertainment product has had some good results in the past.

Like the National Theatre - they were superb under Nick Hytner (before his transfer to the Bridge Theatre) but since Rufus Norris took over results have been dire and I have been less and less interested, especially with some of the expensive writers he's brought in from elsewhere, but I'll always remember the happy years of the past.

Be it their results, the league they are in or even their survival as a club, why do you care about The Royals?

I think I cared more when I was a child

Why do you personally care about Reading FC?

I care more about Reading FC than any other football club, but on the grand scheme of things I probably care more about HNA? than the club these days. I've been on this cesspit of a site for about 25 years now. Christ. What have I done with my life?

Most of those things in the OP true but I like supporting a team that literally nobody anywhere else gives a sh*t about. I play on it in fact.

Think I mentioned this before but my proudest moment in that respect came some ten years ago after a particularly taxing night out in Norwich and ended up back at a hotel in the early hours. Got talking to these two blokes still in the bar and inevitably football came up.

They were both Man Utd fans although one of them wasn't from Manc. So I listened to them drivelling on about Fergie etc and how great they were for some time.

Finally there was a lull in the convo and one of them deigned to ask me who I supported. 'Reading,' I said, probably more firmly than was necessary.

Not kidding, but their faces just dropped and then immediately replaced by a look of utter bemusement. They literally could not think of anything to say on the matter and turned to another subject to talk about.

I didn't even want to say anything more about 'Reading' to them as they wouldn't have been in the slightest bit interested. It was just that one word 'Reading,' a guaranteed conversation killer in any discussion about football. It felt like..,.victory.

If I didn't care it would have been a waste of my life, time, money. Its an investment I make - albeit sometimes the returns on that investment are; Shitty moods, a lot of complaining being mocked for supporting Reading. As a kid you had to support some one, you had to have a team, you couldn't just watch football.
However the take away is, its my local club, why wouldn't I support them? Being mocked is part of being a supporter of any club, I would rather support Reading than a Spurs, city, man u. I could reel off faults / laughing points for most set of supporters tbh and if you cant hack it then maybe football talk isn't for you.
supporting Reading is like doing the lottery with your set numbers, people know the odds but you stay loyal, keep going keep watching and hoping this week is going to be your week. Once you stop and your numbers come in you would be gutted you weren't there to win it.

It's become a "passing interest", unfortunately.

Ex-Father in Law played for the club, my son played for the academy for many years - got together with my Mrs when we lived in Shinfield for a bit used to go to all home games and local-ish away games. Felt a bit of an affinity at that time.

Now i just LOL at the Team Board after defeats.
